Not only does the Association of Students of the University of Nebraska give students a free ride home, but it also helps them to find that home.
With help from Campus Directories, a company based out of Lake Ozark, Mo., ASUN provides students with an off-campus housing guide.
Jessie Matthes, off-campus housing coordinator for ASUN, said the book is geared toward students.
"It is so students have access to a reference guide to Lincoln," Matthes said.
Besides listings of apartment complexes and rental property management companies, the book serves as a reference guide for new homeowners. Apartment inventory checklists, landlord-tenant laws, Lincoln utilities and roommate information also appear in the book.
The book can be picked up in the ASUN student government office and is available online through the ASUN Web site.
To stay current, a new book is published in the fall of each school year and updated again in March, Matthes said.
Campus Directories visits local apartment complexes and properties, offering advertising opportunities, Matthes said. For a fee, a complex or management company can appear in the book.
The company looks for rental property that would appeal to commuter students, because of proximity to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campuses, or more relaxed bylaws
And ASUN provides a city map and business directory to help out-of-state students familiarize themselves with Lincoln.
Matthes said ASUN members also try to personally help students with their home search.
"We try to get people to where their classes are," he said. "If a student has a lot of classes at East Campus, then we will point them toward listings near East Campus."
But whether students utilize the off-campus housing guide is debatable, said graduate student Catherine Wallis.
"I have heard of it, but I don't know anyone who has ever actually used it," Wallis said.
Elizabeth Lamer, a sophomore Spanish and international studies major, said most students use friends to network housing openings.
Fewer copies of the housing guide have been picked up from the ASUN office since it became available online, Matthes said.
"This is another way of building stronger connections between the students and the university," he said.
