Looking back, Looking ahead
It was a year that saw politics overshadow public good, say Asha Krishnaswamy and Vijesh Kamath as they sift through the archives. Politicians spewed venom and a former prime minister wrote letters even as the common man was left to deal with an unprecedented downpour on his own. In 2006, as Bangalore becomes Bengalooru will its roads still be filled with potholesu and trafficu, they wonder.
Reasons for hope
Don Bosco Yuvakara Grama in Magadi has been rescuing and rehabilitating street children. The boys are provided a home, good food, education and later with a job, writes Pamela Antic
Of human bonds
Mushrooming old age homes, increasing divorces, parents working long hours and joint families breaking down into nuclear families have all contributed to the contamination of human values, of love and of human bonds, discovers R Venkatesh.
Generosity abounds
Thanks to the generous contribution of the alumni of BMC, the college has new furniture, audio-visual rooms and electronic equipment and a hall, writes Balakrishna Hosangadi.

 Make hawking legal
It's a good idea to issue licenses to hawkers and make it legal. After all, it's been going on for generations. Issuing licences is a channel to rake in revenues. Use the revenue to keep the surroundings clean. Penalise hawkers who litter the place. Licensing helps the hawkers as they won't be hassled by cops and inspectors. If you can't beat them, join them.

Bengalooru beckons?
Bangalore is all set to become Bengalooru. The names of other towns in Karnataka are also to be changed. Deccan Herald asked its readers their opinion on this decision to change names. Most of the readers feel that a semantic shift would not result in changing the fortunes of either the cities or their denizens. The government should focus on urban infrastructure instead of indulging in this name game, they feel.
