Sushma K Rao is a familiar face on Kannada television. Though she was offered the lead role in the super hit Kannada film Excuse Me, she was reluctant to wear glamourous clothes and therefore denied the offer. Today, she is not only playing a pivotal role (that of Bhavana) in the popular daily soap Guptagamini but is also featuring in the lead role of Ananya in Yaava Janmada Maithri (on ETV Kannada) in which she plays a triple role.
This sweet, loveable and an ever-smiling Cancerian girl from Koppa (Chikmagalur district), has completed her ‘double’ graduation. She has a BSc degree in Computer Science from KLE College and a BA degree in Hindi from the University of Madras. She has also completed her Senior Bharatanatyam examination under the guidance of her guru Shubha Dhananjay. She has also performed at various shows in New Delhi, Mumbai, Jaipur and Thiruvananthapuram including the prestigious Hampi Utsav, and has also won the State and Central scholarship (NCERT) in dance.
This recipient of Aryabhatta Award, was learning Kuchipudi under Vyjayanthi Kashi before arclights beckoned her. Says she, “It has been almost two years since I stopped going to dance classes. I get the time to practice dance only on Sunday evenings.” Continuing in the same breath about her foray into acting, Sushma says, “I am reluctant to start anything new because I am never confident about my abilities. In fact, it was actor Vijayakashi who gave me confidence to try my hand at acting for S Narayan’s teleserial Bhageerathi, in which I played the role of Hema Panchamukhi’s sister.”
How does she go about portraying her roles in television? Says Sushma, “Getting under the skin of a role is easy and I am quite adept at coming out of the same with ease without facing any hangovers.” Describing herself as a friendly person, she signs off saying, “I respect all human beings irrespective of their position or their level of popularity.”
