It could mark the beginning of a new trend. After Rajeev Anchal's `Made in USA,' which was shot on a high definition digital camera, and the digital screening of Santosh Sivan's `Anantabhadram' in a theatre in Alappuzha, director V.K.Prakash's `Moonnamathoraal' is all set to be the first Malayalam film to be made and released on a full-fledged digital format.
Simultaneous release
"The film has been shot with a high definition camera and will be released simultaneously in around 150 theatres across Kerala. The projection will be done with the help of a satellite and a hard disk," says Prakash.
There are no film rolls, theatres will download the film on hard disks on the day of release. The number of days for which the film will be shown can be decided too.
The director points out that the technology has cut down production costs in a big way in the absence of film stock. Also, the picture quality is better when compared to film rolls, which looses its clarity after a few screenings.
Prakash, an ad filmmaker, is the director of `Punaradhivasam,' `Freaky Chakra,' `Mullavalliyum Thenmavum' and `The Police.'
In an era when films are being made with mobile phones, Prakash feels that the digital filmmaking process can help youngsters experiment.
`Moonnamathoraal' is a horror flick. According to scenarist Rajesh Jayaraman, who had scripted the stories for `Achuvinte Amma' and `Aandavan,' "There are no screeches or melodrama. I believe silence can be chilling if portrayed well."
`Moonnamathoraal' was shot in Peerumedu and has Jayaram, Vineeth, Jyotirmayi, Samvritha Sunil and Shirin in the lead. Emil and Eric handle the technical aspects of digital screening.
