VISAKHA KUCHIPUDI Kalakshetram, an offshoot of the Chennai-based Kuchipudi Art Academy, organised a dance performance by its students on the occasion of Srirama Navami. The concert was staged in the Bapu Bhavan premises in Visakhapatnam. Incidentally, the Academy was founded by Padmabhushan Vempati Chinasatyam, the doyen of the dance form.
Inaugurated by its convener-in-chief, S. Vijayakumar, M.D., Vijaynirman Co. Ltd., the performance got off to a scintillating start with "Vinayaka Koutam" set in `Gowla', `Aarabhi' and `Aditalam'. This was presented by Viswasanthi, Aparnaswathi and Kavya. The "Ramayana Sabdam" by Himabindu and Sumathi (set in `Mohana') came next and picturesquely revealed all the important episodes of the Ramayana. The next piece involved danseuses Viswasanthi, Aparna and Kavya in one team with Himabindu and Sumathi in another. The teams alternately danced their way into the hearts of the audience. The movements depicted the "Radha-Madhava Leela" and the splendour of Lord Krishna as they stand described in the compositions of Utukkad Venkata Subbayar, "Brindavana Nilaye" and "Marakathamayamanichela". The dance was in tune with the intricate traverses of `gathi' and `yathi' expertly executed by Ravi (son of Vempati), the `nattuvannar'.
The `Dasavatara' visualisation and the ecstatic expression embedded in the Tyagaraja `Pancharathakrithi' "Jagadanandakaraka" (`Nata') provided the grand finale. Vocal by R. Vanaja, well-supported on mridangam by Suryakanthilal, violin by Balasubrahmanyam, flute by G. Nagarajan and vibrant nattuvangam by Ravi under the masterly supervision of Vempati contributed to the success of the show.
While the principal of the Kalakshetra, Hari Rama Murty, assisted by Y. Hanumantha Rao, V.V.S. Jagannadha Rao and B. Sudarsana Rao, adroitly coordinated the show, K.V. Ramana Rao came up with pleasant compering.
