Rare kritis

AFTER OVERCOMING some initial hiccups Aruna Ranganathan struck good form and sang a traditional type alapana for the Tyagaraja classic, "Nannupalimpa" in Mohanam with a comprehensive neraval and swaras. Violinist Akkarai Subbulakshmi lived up to her reputation. Her Mohanam alapana elicited rounds of applause. Aruna's programme included several rare kritis. Heading this list was Dikshitar's "Dandayudapanim" in Ananda Bhairavi. Aruna's alapana was satisfying with Akkarai's violin play giving decorative touches. The swara exercise at the pallavi was precise. A. S. Ranganathan's teermanams (mridangam) and A. S. Krishnan's melodic answers (morsing) contributed to the concert's success. — K. S.
