Racy in style
AVM Audio - 45 B - 1256 &1257 - Carnatic classical vocal - Sriram Gangadharan - Price Rs.70/-
SRIRAM GANGADHARAN, who is gaining recognition as a Carnatic vocalist, introduces his double album released by AVM Audio, with Mysore Vasudevachar's "Pranamaamyaham" in Gowla, that is embellished with swara passages comparable to the speed of a Michael Schummaker' sports car.
"Jaya jaya" in Nattai by Purandaradasa with solfa sequences in the same mould as the previous song, does compel attention. "Namakusumamula" in Sri ragam has more composure and is rendered with involvement in keeping with the emotions of the lyrics. "Sarasa Samadhana" in Kapi Narayani with occasional contrived articulation, and Patnam Subramania Iyer's "Intha kante" in Kannada with an energetic chittaswaram are the other cogs in the wheel of racy interpretations. A fetching sober alapana of Mukhari, devoid of frenetic fast phrases is a gratifying effort. Embar Kannan's essay of the raga on the violin earns palpable appreciation. Tyagaraja's "Saraseeruhanana" is invested with musical warmth and the sarva laghu swara sequences have a spirit of exuberance. Khamboji expanded with lucid prayogas and a battery of fast brighas a la G.N. Balasubramaniam has an appreciable quality. "Maragadhavalleem" by Dikshitar with swaras in the madhyama and dhuritha kalapramanams that reveal a capacity for laya accuracy make comfortable listening. Neyveli Narayanan (mridangam) and Karthick (ghatam) present a tani avartanam that comes alive with flowing sharp rhythmic sequences bang on target. The rest of the programme with songs in the lighter vein such as "Radha Sametha'' in Misra Yaman, "Nee Ninaindal" in Dharbari Kanada, a popular Thiruppugazh in Ananda Bhairavi, etc are pleasing tit-bits.
