Presented with aesthetic contours

TO WHAT empyrean heights Visranti can take a musician was amply demonstrated by Gayatri Venkataraghavan in her concert for Nada Inbam. In the present day context of collapsing Carnatic music values, the whole beauty of whatever she sang was immaculately presented. It was a delight, the sancharas of ragas and the interpretation of songs moulding themselves to form the aesthetic contours.

It made one wonder how many musicians have the grit to please the listeners on their own terms as did Gayatri Venkataraghavan. She selected the items shrewdly to present a comprehensive and balanced performance. It was heart-warming to see her sense the true aura of sanctity and classicism of Carnatic music.

Two or three factors stood out in her recital — the choice of a major raga Kalyani shortly after the start followed by the attractive kirtana, ``Pankaja-lochana.''

She provided snapshot images of the raga in the alapana, the precision of Kalyani's bhava and swaroopa being distinctive features. She never depended on kalpana swaras to wrench audience attention. It was very sparingly used.

The second important aspect was the compactness and brevity of raga alapanas of Ritigowla and Yadukulakambhoji, two rakti ragas, embellished with silken sancharas. Her main effort was Bhairavi.

Sensitive in concept and elegant in coverage, there lurked the joys of Bhairavi in every phrasing. Her voice blending well with the sruti, she could capture the serenity of the accepted idealism of Bhairavi's finesse.

The song was ``Sari- Evvare'' handled with consummate reverential vision. The other emotional items were `Cheraravdemira'' (Ritigowla), ``Ninnu- Sevinchina'' (Yadukulakambhoji).

Her performance testified to the truth that good music creates a feeling of the precious moments of solitude.

V. V. Srinivasa Rao (violin) was positively responsive to the inspirational environment in his solo session of raga delineation. His creative impulses were directed to uninhibited gracefulness to match the vocalist's quality.

In the over-all excellence shared between Gayatri Venkataraghavan and Srinivasa Rao, the listeners could hardly notice the way the mridangist B. Sivaraman and A. V. Venkatasubramanian (ghatam) extended their meaningful support. — SVK
