Heart-warming veena
IT HAS to be accepted, however disheartening it may be, that the veena as a concert instrument is losing currency for more reasons than one.
In this context, the veena recital of Kalyani Ganesan broadcast on September 15 did warm the cockles of the rasika's heart. The Sivan song in Bowli with swara sequences, soft and smooth, and the raga expansion of Lathangi dotted with pleasant prayogas provided much aesthetic satisfaction.
Patnam Subramania Iyer's "Aparadhamula'' although worked to the bone for many years, was refreshing, and was mounted with precise swara prastharas. Sankarabharanam was methodically delineated with lush phrases strictly within the parameters of classical music, evoking the thought that melody is more sacrosanct than mere performing skills. Tyagaraja's "Manasuswadeena'' in Achowka kalapramanam and the impromptu swaras were appreciable efforts the tiny needle of error in the otherwise haystack of quality being the minor hiccup in the finishing swara passage. The mridangam and ghatam artistes, Poongulam Subramaniam and A. S. Shankar were engaged in a tani avartanam that drew a lot of cheer.
