Connecting the MapQuest.com® Site To Your Garmin® GPS Device

The new MapQuest.com ”Send to GPS” web destination feature gives you a convenient way to plan ahead while utilizing your Garmin GPS device. Plan a trip, search within the 16 million MapQuest® Points of Interest from your computer and send addresses and business listings to your personal navigation device by simply clicking on the ”Send to GPS” link conveniently found on results pages throughout the MapQuest.com site.

Is My GPS Device Compatible?

The MapQuest® “Send to GPS” web feature currently works with compatible Garmin® GPS devices. Allowing your Garmin GPS device to “talk” to the MapQuest.com site is simple: go to the Garmin Communicator Plugin website and download the correct version for your home computer’s operating system. Once the plugin is installed, and you have trip results, you can download your results from the MapQuest.com Maps and Directions results pages onto your Garmin device.

How it Works

MapQuest.com is already the leading maps and directions website in the country; used by millions of people each month.1 Users can pull up a map, plan a route, or find one of 16 million Points of Interest from the MapQuest database. Now, placing that information on your connected GPS device is just a click away. To begin, please make sure you’ve downloaded the correct Garmin Communicator Plugin for your GPS device. Then connect your GPS device to your computer by using the USB cable or serial connection that came with it. After planning your itinerary on MapQuest.com, click on the ‘Send to GPS’ link above your destination details or the ‘Send to GPS’ link in the map at the bottom of the page.

Once the “Send to GPS” link is selected, a popup window will either select your GPS device or prompt you to select a GPS device. If you selected a single destination on MapQuest.com, select the ”Waypoints” button in the upper right. If you have an itinerary using MapQuest.com Directions, and you wish to travel in sequence to multiple locations, then select the “Route” button and give the itinerary a file name2:

Compare saved as waypoints and saved as route.

Once you have downloaded your results, disconnect your device cable and check the menus in your personal navigation device. Since menus vary with each Garmin device, look for your saved route or waypoints under a menu labeled ”Tools,” ”Routes,” ”Favorites,” or ”Where To.” If you do not see one of these menus, please consult your Garmin manual for details.
