Huntsville, home of Sam Houston (his statue is the world’s tallest of an American Hero at 67 feet tall on a 10 foot sunset granite base) and named for a town in Alabama, offers visitors an array of discoveries - history, nature, prominent state institutions, antiques - all mixed with hometown hospitality. The small-town, historic flair of Huntsville brings new meaning to ‘Texas Charm’. There’s truly something for everyone in Huntsville!

SANCTIONED By the American Volkssport Association (AVA), a member of the International Federation of Popular Sports (IVV).  Participants in this event may receive credit toward IVV awards.

DRIVING DIRECTIONS 1400 19th St, Huntsville, TX 77340. Telephone: 936/294-1832.

From Dallas:  take I-45 South to Exit 116, turn left onto TX-30/US-190 East (11th ST); cross over I-45 overpass, turn right on TX-75 (Sam Houston Ave). Continue South to 19th ST. Turn right and continue halfway down the block past the Steamboat House to Walker Education Center on the right.

From Houston:  take I-45 North to Exit 116, turn right onto 11th ST, turn right on TX-75 (Sam Houston Ave). Continue South to 19th ST. Turn right and continue halfway down the block past the Steamboat House to Walker Education Center on the right. The Walk Box is at the Information Desk by the gift shop.

START/FINISH TIMES

Start anytime during Center hours: 9:00am-4:30pm Tuesday-Saturday. Sundays-12pm-4:30pm Sun. Closed Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day.

CREDIT

One IVV event credit per the first six months of the year (before July 01) and a second credit for the last six months (after June 30). There are no limits to the distance credits you can earn, but $3.00 must be paid each time the course is walked for credit except that a trail may be walked twice on the same day for one fee.

TRAIL DESCRIPTION

The 10 kilometer (6.2 miles) walk (rating = 1+) includes historical sites such as Sam Houston Memorial Park and Museum, Walls Unit-Department of Criminal Justice, Sam Houston State University, Sam Houston's Grave and Monument, Oakwood Cemetary, and Gibbs Powell Museum.  The trail is rated 1+, mostly along city sidewalks and paved streets; however, some curbs and hills may be difficult for wheelchairs and strollers.  A 5 kilometer option is available.

REFRESHMENTS

Restrooms and water are available at the Start/Finish.  Food and beverages  are available at various businesses along the route.  Water should be carried with you.

REGISTRATION/ FEES

There is no pre-registration.  The start/finish functions will be self-service, on the honor system.  The fees are:  B award & IVV credit: $5.00;  IVV credit only:  $3.00;  Non-IVV participant:  free

No refunds for inclement weather.  All participants must carry a start card and return it when finished.  IVV record books ($5) are available for purchase at the start/finish box or may be obtained from the event point of contact.

ELIGIBILITY

These events are open to the public and all ages are welcome. Family participation is encouraged but children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Pets are welcome but must be kept on a leash at all times.  Pets are NOT allowed inside any museums or businesses.
