Little Red

Easy
By Aine Mahon

Having a child brings back all your own childhood memories, especially those of the stories that were read to you. And what better way to teach these stories to your children than by using toy characters, which you've made yourself. And the beauty of this project is that you can just use up odds and ends of double knitting yarn that you have lying around. Great for stashbusting!

SIZE

6 inches tall

MATERIALS

Waste and scrap DK yarns were used to complete this project. A recommended yarn and colors to use for the project would be:

Sirdar Bonus DK [100% acrylic, 306 yards/280 meters per 3.5 ounce/100 gram ball];

FINISHING

LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD

Seam the back edge of the body from the top down. Turn right side out and stuff firmly.  Use a length of Bright Green to gather the cast on sts, pull up tightly and fasten off. Use a length of Flesh Tone yarn to sew running sts around the base of the head.  Pull these sts up a little to shape the neck further.
Embroider on the basic face. Use a red coloring pencil to lightly rub over the cheeks to give a slight flush to the face.

Place the hair on the head, leaving about 5-6 rows between the hair and the eyes at the top of the face. Sew in position. Use a length of Chocolate yarn to work a few small 'daisy' stitches as a fringe (refer to photo for placement guide).
Seam row ends of arms. Stuff hands, but leave rest of arms very loose. Position arms on the side of the body and sew in place.
Fold bound off edge of cape in half and seam. Place cape over head, with row ends to the front. Catch the marked row ends under the chin and sew together in position. Use Signal Red to sew a small bow at this point.
Seam row ends of basket. Gather cast on sts, pull up tightly and fasten off. Sew row ends of handle to basket on opposite sides of basket. Gather around all edges of picnic blanket and pull up slightly to make it into a 'puff' shape. Place into the basket and catch in place with a few stitches.

GRANNY

Make up body, arms, face and hair as for Little Red Riding Hood.
Seam row ends of hair bun. Stuff firmly. Position on back of top of head, over the top of the main hair piece. Sew in position.
Place collar around neck and seam the row ends together.
Use a length of Stone yarn to work 3 sets of 2-3 backstitches down the front of the body as buttons (use photo as a placement guide).

WOLF

Make up body and arms as for Little Red Riding Hood.
Embroider only the eyes from the Basic Face instructions. Sew two downward slanting backstitches over the eyes as angry/cross eyebrows.

Seam row ends of nose. Stuff firmly. Position on face, just below the eyes and sew in place.
Fold ears in half and seam row ends. Position ears on top of head and sew in place.
Sew one end of the tail to the bottom of the body at the back.
