The front page headline and accompanying article in the New York Times declared:  $14 BILLION DENIED FOR GM AND CHRYSLER.

In an article by David M. Herszenhorn datelined Washington, December 12, he wrote:

"The Senate on Thursday night abandoned efforts to fashion a government rescue of the American auto industry as Senate Republicans refused to support a bill endorsed by the White House and congressional Democrats.

"The failure to reach agreement on Capitol Hill raised a specter of financial collapse for General Motors and Chrysler, which some experts say may not be able to survive until the end of the year.
