George Bush's Thanksgiving Speech Email Print

In a New York Times article by Sheryl Gay Stolberg on November 19, we read from George Bush's first official Thanksgiving speech:

"In a reflective mood as he looks toward his final year in office, President Bush delivered his first official Thanksgiving speech Monday, urging Americans to `show their thanks by giving back' and to remember that, `our nation's greatest strength is the decency and compassion of our people.'"

For 7 years Bush had remembered our Thanksgiving with the presidential tradition of pardoning a turkey.  He continued this in the Rose Garden the following Tuesday.  But this year Bush gave his first official Thanksgiving speech, highlighting two words "decency" and "compassion."

The question must be asked and answered.  Has the U.S. shown decency and compassion in the Iraq War debacle?  Ask the 2 ½ million Iraqis who have been forced to flee to Syria, Lebanon and Iran if they believe the U.S. has displayed decency and compassion in the Iraq War.
