Hotmail & AOL Kept Truthout from Customers? Email Print

PBS Mind reported the following at Buck Naked Politics:

"Hotmail unilaterally decided to call my [Truthout] subscription 'spam' and stop forwarding it.

"Mind you, it did not stop forwarding me 'get your viagra here' e-mails, phony stock-scam e-mails, 'easy Russian bride' e-mails, or a host of e-mails offering me advice on how to enlarge my penis."

Being female, PBS Mind doesn't have a penis, but you get the point.  Unfortunately, she's not the only one reporting that email providers have blocked Truthout....

Saving American Science Part II Email Print

In the past I have written about the right wing's attack on science, including the Intelligent Deception Lobby and Lobby of Denial and urged you to lobby for restoration of some science funding that Bush has cut. Well, here is further evidence of a right wing attack on science...and a top scientist who is sick of it.

Intelligent Deception Part II: The Denial Lobby Email Print

Not long ago I wrote a diary on the validity of global warming. I followed that up with a description of how the right wing in America is attacking science, with an emphasis on the "Intelligent Deception" movement. I now want to put the former in the context of the latter and discuss the "Lobby of Denial," a concerted effort to interfere with genunine science in studying climate change.

High School Censorship (now with personal anecdotes!) Email Print

Some 1,800 copies of a high school paper at a Tennessee school were confiscated a few days ago.  The reason: the students wrote about birth control and tattoos.

I got my first taste of student freedom of speech--or lack thereof--while I was in high school.  I went to an private school, so I understand how my rights may be a bit different. But the notion of silencing student voices is the same.

I wrote an article. On school computers, in the library.  It was entitled "GC Pride: We're Not On Your Side" (yeah, clever, wasn't it?) and it discussed not just the lack of financial support for students, but about the general disconnect between students and the administration.  I pressed "print", ran by the printer, picked up my copy, and went off to Calculus.

Fox News Won't Air Ad Opposing Alito Email Print

From the AP:

Fox News is refusing to air an ad critical of Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito, citing its lawyers' contention that the spot is factually incorrect.

A spokesman for the groups sponsoring the ad said the network's decision reflects the political right's effort to shield President Bush's choice for the high court.

[snip]

Paul Schur, a spokesman for Fox, said that according to the network's lawyers, the ad is "factually incorrect and we've given them an opportunity to fix it."

Said Jim Jordan, a spokesman for the groups: "The entire right wing establishment, from Pat Robertson to Jerry Falwell to Fox News, has circled the wagons around Sam Alito."

Asked about changing the ad in response to Fox's request, Jordan said, "Roger Ailes doesn't get to edit our ads." Ailes is chairman of Fox News.

(The groups backing the ad include the Alliance for Justice, the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights, People for The American Way and abortion rights organizations.)
