Shield Section

Summary
A projector array produces a quantum field around the ship that blocks high–energy weapons. This field can be overwhelmed by too much incoming energy — to avoid a back surge to the engines, which would result, at the very least, in the destruction of the engine section, the shields will temporarily power–down and the system is reset. It may be possible to improve the field through research.
Shield mission and command sections project energy fields that absorb all enemy fire. These shields can only absorb a limited amount of damage before shutting down, exposing the ship itself to enemy fire. However, damage will never soak through an active shield and even a siege driver round will only achieve shutdown. Once the shield is shut down, it remains non–operational until it can recharge. While individual shield damage capacity is defined in the corresponding technology descriptions, there is an additional multiplier based on hull class.
Loss of the shield section will shut down the shield permanently, until the section is repaired. There are also deflectors and energy absorbers, defensive fields designed to counter specific weapons systems. Shield technology can also be upgraded through research.
At the time of ship design, this section can be equipped with later shield upgrades like Shields Mk. 2, a meson shield that negates beam weapons, or even grav shields that negate ballistic weapons and gravity–based fields.
