As a result of your research, various ship sections will become available to further improve your chances of Galactic Domination.

A ship consists of one of each type of section: command, mission and engine.

Taking the total of three types of sections and three classes of ships each race will have between 73 and 80 unique sections to create ships.

Each ships section has some amount of base hit points. This base hit point total is modified by only 2 factors. The first is the family of "Metal" armors that provide a percentage hit point increase vs. all weapons and provides a low chance of ricocheting kinetic weapons. The other hit point bonus a section can receive is from the weapons mounted on it. This follows the relatively subtle logic that part of the difference between a Particle Beam and a much higher tech Meson Beam is not only the barrel but the infrastructure needed to create the beam. The development of stronger conduits, reinforced bulkheads to shield from weapon side effects and the like just make for a slightly tougher ship.

Each ship section is rated for both Tactical Speed (in meters/second) and Turning Speed (in degrees/second). Adding these values for each section will give the maximum tactical and turning speeds for that combination of ship sections. And no matter what ship sections are used, speed values can go no lower than 10 m/s for Tactical and 5 deg/s for Turning.

A project is underway in this forum thread to gather pictures of every ship section of every race from the ship design screen.
