The engine section of a ship dictates how fast it can move on the strategic map and in combat, and how far it can go before it needs to be refueled.
The most basic engines are built on a powerplant, such as a fission reactor. Human, Liirian and Tarkasian advances in their respective FTL technology can be added to these powerplants to make better engine sections, such as the Human Focused Node Fission Section. Hivers don't improve their gate capacity through engine sections, but they can improve their STL engines in other ways, as in the Long Range Fission Section, for example.
