Expansion and version templates

silvaril thinks this is nifty...
  • Sorry Sil, but I don't like it. We've known for a long time the game moves forward and the number of techs and weapons that get changed in updates is huge let alone in an expansion. I'd rather have the banners show which expansion introduces the content and then just keep everything as up to date as we can. It's too redundant to the version templates being added to techs and weapons. --Rorschach 14:17, 20 October 2008 (UTC)
  • The issue I see is that folks new to the franchise are going to pick up AMoC on top of the CE, or the Platinum edition when/if it arrives, go looking for info and find that some of the stuff they are looking for is only available in Born of Blood.
I am looking for a way to state Introduced in Born of Blood and also state Yes, that means it is in AMoC too...

  • We can state Introduced in BoB and add an icon to the version template so it would look like that:
Sword of the StarsAMoC-Icon.png Version 1.6.2

  • AMoC requires BoB just as BoB requires SotS. Everything that's in BoB is also in AMoC, I don't see why you need to point that out. I'm fine with changing he wording to "introduced in BoB". Version numbers should only be used for techs and weapons where there's a lot of individual elements and the numbers could change in the small updates. I don't want to version control the whole wiki, it should be as up to date as possible. --Rorschach 21:23, 21 October 2008 (UTC)
  • I don't think we need to add the icon to the version template if we are going to use one of the above as a template on the page as well. I really like the version template as just that: a easy way to let everyone know what version the weapon was last modified by. And honestly, I don't think that we need the preceding "Sword of the Stars" at all, just the link to the proper version page. I think that the Version line in the weapon template should read: "This information last changed in Version 1.6.2." instead of the current "This information valid for Sword of the StarsVersion 1.6.2." --Nspace 22:07, 21 October 2008 (UTC)
  • I like the "last changed" version. And I was thinking about changing it to something like "This information was last updated for Version 1.6.2." (Help with proper wording is needed. :)) To keep "this info is valid" wording consistant for some techs you should update weapon data as well which I'd like to update not right away but some time later. -- Dastox 21:44, 27 October 2008 (UTC)

  • OK, so a year and some later, I'm a little confused. Are we using the "Version:" part of the Technology template and the "Updated" part of the Shipsecsum template to show that the info shown was last changed in the listed version or are we using it to show that we have checked the info on the page against the latest update and that it is correct, even if nothing on the page has changed? There weren't many changes in 1.7.2, so I want to make sure what I'm doing before making those changes. :) And on a slightly different topic, I'm thinking of going back through and removing (or moving to a "old templates" category) all of the old templates that are no longer in use. Any thoughts on if they should be deleted or just simply relocated? --Nspace 04:59, 2 April 2010 (UTC)
Should probably change one or the other so they are using the same language.  ;) It should reflect that the information is valid for the current version, or whatever version is indicated if not current. Your choice what ya do with the old templates, though having them available for reference is nice... --silvaril 22:24, 12 April 2010 (UTC)

  • I don't see a need to have the wiki be about the "history" of the game especially in the reference sections. Everyone should be playing 1.7.2 because that's the way the devs want it. So for my money (but I'm by no means the final decision maker) I'd like the field to be an identifier that the information in the page is up to date and confirmed correct for the latest version. Everything else (IMHO) is fluff and extra work. --Rorschach 18:05, 15 April 2010 (UTC)
  • That's pretty much how I was feeling as well. Over the next little bit, I'm going to go ahead and change Shipsecsum's "Updated" to match the Technology template's "Version:", write up some usage notes on it and then get to updating the various bits. I'm also leaning toward keeping the old templates for reference, but moving them all to a "old templates" category. --Nspace 15:48, 16 April 2010 (UTC)
