Summary

Spy ships are basically camouflaged listening stations. They are ships made to look like asteroids (or asteroids hollowed out to be ships) that can be emplaced in systems with asteroid belts. Spy ships are built and deployed by repair and salvage cruisers. Deploying/retrieving a spy ship can be a strategic level event, or a tactical event. If in a tactical event, the carrying cruiser must come within a certain distance of a suitable group of asteroids to deploy the spy ship. Similarly, in a tactical retrieval the pickup cruiser must get within a certain distance of the spy ship to complete the pickup.

Spy ships will alert you when they have discovered information of importance, and you can then choose if you want to go pick them up, or have the spy ship continue to gather information. They are not cloaked and have a slim chance of being spotting at any moment. If a spy ship is detected, they squeal for help and you are given one turn to retrieve them before the enemy player can engage and destroy them.

Spy ships can discover information about a planet's defenses, what activity is occurring in the planet's trade routes, the last 5 turns of event history for an empire and can give the ability to view another empires tech tree (this is supposedly rare/requires a long and risky stay in enemy territory).

Usage

You can build spies by going to the action section for your fleet. When around a planet you own select and look at the drop down. It is the drop down that gives you Mine, repair, refuel, refine, Build (if you have a construction ship), Dump ore and the rest.

Select Build spy, next turn your repair and salvage vessel has a spy.

Fly your repair ship to an enemy owned planet and if they have a NAP or are allied you wont go into combat. Instead from that same menu a new option appears called deploy spy.

Later on you will need to go back to pick your spy up and return them to your empire.

To deploy the spy you need to select the asteroid shaped spy ship that is under your Repair ship. Once selected you have a deploy option click this and your spy is away.

Now a quick note on this its really really very obvious that a spy is in Orbit if the target world does not have an asteroid belt to hide the spy in. Also ship sensors can identify spy ships, so you are best to deploy your spy behind an asteroid, in its sensor shadow.

Practice deploying spies on NAP'd empires and allies. It is also a good idea to cloak the repair vessel, or make some attempt at stealthing it.
