Frequently Asked Questions

What is an optometrist? Walmart Vision Centers are staffed by independent, licensed, board−certified optometrists. According to the American Optometry Association:
  • Doctors of optometry (O.D.s) are the primary health care professionals for the eye. Optometrists examine, diagnose, treat and manage diseases, injuries and disorders of the visual system, the eye and associated structures as well as identify related systemic conditions affecting the eye.
  • Doctors of optometry prescribe medications, provide low vision rehabilitation, vision therapy, spectacle lenses and contact lenses and perform certain surgical procedures. Optometrists counsel their patients regarding surgical and non−surgical options that meet their visual needs related to their occupations, avocations and lifestyle.
  • An optometrist has completed pre−professional undergraduate education in a college or university and four years of professional education at a college of optometry, leading to the doctor of optometry (O.D.) degree. Some optometrists complete an optional residency in a specific area of practice. Optometrists are eye health care professionals state−licensed to diagnose and treat diseases and disorders of the eye and visual system.

What are the necessary education and credentials to practice optometry? An optometrist has completed pre−professional undergraduate education in a college or university and four years of professional education at a college of optometry, achieving the doctor of optometry (O.D.) degree and is licensed by a state board of optometry.
Will Walmart Vision Centers accept my insurance? Walmart Vision Centers accept most National insurances as in−network providers, including: Advantica, Avesis, Block, Davis Vision, March Vision, Medical Eye Services, National Vision Administrators (NVA), OptiCare, Optum Health, Starmount/Always, Superior Vision and many local plans. When should I get my vision checked?

Most eye care professionals recommend that the average patient have a full eye exam every two years. If you have a family history of eye−related problems or conditions that can affect the eyes − diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol or macular degeneration − or are over 60 years old, you should get an exam at least once yearly.

Children usually get their first eye exam at 6 months, again at 3 years and then once a year until they are 18. Good vision is essential for learning in the classroom.

You should also schedule an eye exam if you experience any sudden changes in vision, including blurred vision, trouble reading, flashing lights, dark spots or halos.

How do I know if I need glasses or contacts? Your optometrist will be able to diagnose and treat any refractive or binocular conditions that may require eyeglasses and/or contact lenses.
Are contact lenses right for me? Contact lenses are more comfortable and functional than ever. Even if your eyes are sensitive or you need a specialized prescription (like bifocals), advances in contact lens technology make them a great choice for almost everyone. Visit a Walmart Vision Center or check out Walmart Contacts to learn more about the great contact lens options that are available.
