Commercial real estate

Frustrated with the difficulty of finding suitable tenants, UBC graduate Bill MacEwen founded SpaceList, now Canada’s largest database of commercial real estate listings.

SpaceList gives tenants, landlords new lease on life

About nine years ago Bill MacEwen, then a 25-year-old graduate from UBC, was trying to find an office space for a business idea he called WorkSpace. Finding a space for the shared work hub was initially a tough task for MacEwen, who is now the 34-year-old founder of SpaceList, a Gastown-based tech company launched in 2012 that posts free commercial real estate listings. It’s like a Craigslist for office space leases and other commercial properties.

Chuck Chiang: Free trade deals easy to reach, but difficult to implement

There was a palpable buzz at the Canada Korea Business Association’s annual meeting in Vancouver late last month. The source of the energy: The announcement earlier this year that Ottawa has reached a Free-Trade Agreement with Seoul. At the May 23 gathering of about 100 private and public sector members and representatives, the consensus was clear: With 88 per cent of the tariffs on Canadian exports slated to be removed immediately upon the FTA’s implementation, there has never been a better time to for Canadians pursue business in South Korea.

Lost camera

Paul Burgoyne lost his camera in a shipwreck two years ago and it was recovered by a group of SFU divers. The photographs were still on the memory card and Future Shop brought him a gift with a new waterproof Nikon camera with accessories.

Surprise replacement for Vancouver artist's waterlogged camera (with video)

If the average customer walked into a store and tried to turn in a camera on warranty after it had been sitting on the ocean floor for two years, we’re guessing the answer would be no. But Vancouver artist Paul Burgoyne got lucky this week when Future Shop arrived at his studio to surprise him with a new camera — this one waterproof — to replace the one that sunk with his boat off Vancouver Island two years ago.
