Roadmap
Stage 1: New Game
The first step is to play and enjoy Dark Souls 2! Once you defeat the final boss, you will be sent back to Majula for the opportunity of post game cleanup. You don't immmediately start new game+ like the two previous games. Therefore, there are far fewer missable trophies than before. All of the trophies I have marked as missable are only missable if the relevent NPC is killed, except for Royal Sorcerer Navlaan.Royal Sorcerer Navlaan is an NPC on the ground floor of Aldia's Keep. He will be locked in a small magic cell under the right side staircase. Navlaan will assign you quests to murder NPCs in exchange for rewards. On the opposite side, there is a lever and messages that say 'don't pull.' Do not pull the lever. This will release Navlaan, ending your sidequest and allowing him to start invading your game. Also, know that all of the items he asks for can be obtained without killing the NPC. I would recommend completely ignoring him until you are in Stage 2: Post Game Cleanup.
As long as you dont kill any npcs and don't free Navlaan, you should be able to play Dark Souls 2 at your own pace without fretting over trophies. The trophies in Dark Souls 2 are not especially difficult, the challenge will come from the unmerciful nature of the game itself.
If you want, I would recommend starting on Moonlight Greatsword and Lucatiel during this playthrough, as the bosses are easier the first time through. In addition, I would get started on getting rank 3 in the Heirs to the Sun covenant. This requires 30 bosses beaten in co-op play and is needed for the Master of Miracles and Selfless Giver trophies.
Also be warned, this guide contains gameplay spoilers. Proceed at your own discretion.
Trophies you should work towards in Stage 1
Stage 2: Post Game Cleanup
After defeating the final boss and viewing the credits, you will land back in Majula. Use this opportunity to run around Drangleic collecting as much as you can and knocking out every trophy for this stage. When the only things you are missing are the spells you need to get on NG+, proceed to the next step.Trophies you should work towards in Stage 2
Stage 3: New Game+ and New Game++
There are 7 spells that you need that can only be obtained in New Game+. For each of the Great Soul demons you defeat in New Game+, you will get an additional soul that can be traded to Straid of Olaphis for a unique spell. The final step for the platinum will be to get the 3 covenant spells from Chancellor Wellager. To do this, first finish the game in New Game+. Before going on further, go back to Drangleic Castle and use a Bonfire Ascetic to fight the Looking Glass Knight again. Now, you should have defeated him 3 total times. Go to Majula and start New Game++. When you get up to Drangleic Castle again, speak with Chancellor Wellager and he will sell your last spells. You can, of course, get these spells by reaching rank 3 in the Brotherhood of Blood and the Blue Sentinels, but that will require 1000 wins in pvp.

Tips & Strategies
Dark Souls is a game that rewards patience and punishes greed. The most important key to success is to be careful in all situations. Here are a collection of tips I've accumulated and I'll try to add more as I find them.
- If you are connected online, watch for bloodstains and messages. This is the easist way to find traps before they spring on you, and Dark Souls loves punishing rash players. Messages will also help you find valuable loot behind hidden passages and in secret areas.
- Chests can be trapped in many ways. Some chests will fire arrows back at you, release poison, or provide an ambush opportunity for enemies. Messages and bloodstains will help you see if a chest is trapped. Also, some chests may actually be a mimic waiting to munch on unsuspecting players. Be sure to give a solid hit to chest to check for mimics. Be extra careful, as wooden chests can be destroyed, forfeiting the item inside until your next playthrough. In addition, if a mimic is killed at the same time you die, its drop is forfeited as well.
- Talk to NPCs as much as you can. Most NPCs will have a lot of dialog before offering you an important item, thier shop window, or many other benefits. Always talk to NPCs until they start repeating dialog.
- Don't attack anyone you can't lock onto. This usually means that it is an NPC or someone otherwise better left alive. Killing NPCs is the fastest way to lock yourself out of trophies until the next playthrough. If you attack an NPC without kill him or her, you can request absolution from Cromwell the Pardoner in Brightstone Cove Tseldora. Keep in mind that while using a bonfire ascetic will reset an area and its boss, it will not revive NPCs.
- If you are a new player, use a shield. Shields are very important for defending yourself before you learn how to dodge and avoid attacks. Also, look for a shield with a high physical defense and don't be afraid to use different shields for different situations.
- Spend your souls regularly. There is little benefit to hoarding your souls and this will only make you angrier when you lose them. As a general rule, don't go into a boss fight with enough souls to level up.
- Stats will offer diminishing returns as you level them. Most stats will offer their biggest benefit up to level 20, a smaller benefit up to 40 or 50, and then very little after that. Try and decide on a playstyle early on, but don't be afraid to branch out on your stats. Strength and Endurance are good defensive stats even for a caster, while Intelligence and Faith offer good spells for a melee character.
- In Dark Souls 2, you can now clear out an area permanently for a playthrough. After killing an enemy about 8-10 times, they will stop spawning. Feel free to clear an area you are having trouble with, like the pathway between a bonfire and a boss.
- You don't have to actually join a covenant to get the trophy for discovering it. The trophy will unlock on the 'Would you like to join this covenant' screen regardless of what you choose. Bear in mind that for some covenants, like the Blue Sentinels or Dragon Remnants, you still need to present an item to the NPC in order to be offered the choice.

Last Giant Defeat the Last Giant |
|
|
This trophy is story related and unmissable.
The Last Giant can be found in the Forest of Fallen Giants. Take the elevator down and it will bring you to your first boss fight. The easiest way to beat him is to stay under his legs and he will have trouble hitting you. When he gets low on health, he will rip one arm out and try to hit you with it. As ridiculous as this is, it does give him extra reach on his attacks, so be careful.

Sinner's Bonfire Light the primal bonfire in Sinner's Rise |
|
|
Defeat the Lost Sinner in the Sinner's Rise and light the primal bonfire. This fight can be difficult depending on your build as the Lost Sinner is very agile. To make it easier on yourself, you can get the Bastille Key from Belfry Luna to open the gates on the side of his arena. In these tiny rooms will be oil you can light up with your torch. Doing so will brighten up the room and reduce the Lost Sinner's strength.
It is possible to progress without lighting all primal bonfires by acquiring a Soul Memory of 1,000,000 on your first playthrough. If you do so, be sure to visit later in the story or during clean-up to light the bonfire and receive your trophy.

Iron Keep Bonfire Light the primal bonfire in the Iron Keep |
|
|
Defeat the Old Iron King in the Iron Keep and light the primal bonfire. I would recommend a good fire resistant shield for the fight, but I don't believe it is very difficult. Rosabeth of Melfia will sell the Flame Quartz ring in Majula after you save her.

Gulch Bonfire Light the primal bonfire in the Black Gulch |
|
|
Defeat The Rotten in the Black Gulch and light the primal bonfire. The Rotten hits very hard, but his attacks are relatively slow. Perhaps the most difficult part of the fight are the fire pits dotted around the area. Be careful where you stand and watch out for his grab, which will likely one-shot you.

Brightstone Bonfire Light the primal bonfire in Brightstone Cove Tseldora |
|
|
Defeat The Duke's Dear Freja in the Brightstone Cove Tseldora and light the primal bonfire. Try to clear a few of the spiders early in the fight to make it easier. She has two heads on each side of her body that you must attack, as her legs are impervious to damage. Her stomps are easy to dodge and her beam attack can be outrun.

Looking Glass Knight Defeat Looking Glass Knight |
|
|
This trophy is story related and unmissable.
Defeat the Looking Glass Knight in Dragleic Castle. The boss himself is not overly difficult as his attacks are easy to dodge. The trick to him is that around 30-40% life, he will summon in a black phantom to fight you. It is likey you will have to fight an npc, but if a player is trying to invade, he can be summoned in during your boss fight. I would recommend killing the black phantom as fast as possible, but if you defeat the Looking Glass Knight first, the phantom will despawn.
Also casters should watch out, as his shield will deflect magic attacks.

Vendrick Defeat Vendrick |
|
|
This is an optional boss fight in the Undead Crypt. Vendrick is wandering around in the area where you got the King's Ring. He is very tough and you should not challenge him until the very end of the game. I believe the best way to fight him is fast rolling to dodge his attacks, as he can stagger you fairly easily. Watch for his patterns as you should be able to take him.
Vendrick does have one trick to him: you need to have Souls of a Giant in your inventory to deal meaningful damage to him. Three can be found the the memories you visit with the Ashen Mist Heart. Another can be found by killing the two giants in the Black Gulch.

Heirs to the Sun
Rank 1 - 10 Sunlight Tokens: Sunlight Parma
Rank 2 - 20 Sunlight Tokens: Sunlight Sword
Rank 3 - 30 Sunlight Tokens: Sunlight Spear miracle (needed for Master of Miracles)
You can join the Heirs of the Sun in Harvest Valley. After the second bonfire, you'll come across an area with two large enemies standing in a poison pit. Cross the bridge and take the pathway to the left towards a cave. In this cave you will find a shrine, kneel in front of it to join the covenant.
Ranking up this covenant requires offers of sunlight tokens obtained through co-op play. Defeating a boss as a member of the Heirs to the Sun or alongside one will grant 1 sunlight token.
I have confirmed that sunlight tokens are a rare drop off of the giants in Harvest Valley and the falconers in Things Betwixt in NG+. While this is a good way to supplement your co-op grind, the unreliability of rare drops and limited potential spawns of enemies makes this a difficult way to get all 30. However, this does mean that the is achievable offline. Lastly, you can boost your item discovery with the Covetous Gold Serpent Ring +2 by defeating the Gargoyles in Belfry Luna on New Game+.

Blue Sentinels
Rank 1 - 50 wins: Spirit Tree Shield
Rank 2 - 150 wins: Wrath of the Gods miracle
Rank 3 - 500 wins: Bountiful Sunlight miracle
To join the Blue Sentinels, you must talk to Blue Sentinel Targray in the Cathedral of Blue. The cathedral can be reached from Heide's Tower of Flame. Take the left at the intersection until you reach a large drawbridge, the switch will be on the right. In the cathedral you will have to defeat a boss that Dark Souls fans may recognize. After this room, Targray will be standing on a balcony. You must present him a token of fidelity in order to gain access to the covenant. A token of fidelity can be found in Huntsman's Copse, on a platform under the long wooden bridge.
Ranking up this covenant requires pvp wins with either the invader of a member of Way of the Blue, or a duel with a member of the Blue Sentinels. Note that these two methods do not stack, so focus on one or the other.

Brotherhood of Blood

Rank 2 - 150 wins: Crescent Sickle
Rank 3 - 500 wins: Great Chaos Fireball
To join the Brotherhood of Blood, you must talk to Titchy Gren in the Undead Purgatory. From Huntsman's Copse take the path across a long wooden bridge. This will take you to a fight with the Executioner Chariot boss. The Undead Purgatory can be found up the stairs near the gate switch. Present Titchy Gren with a token of spite to gain access to the covenant. A token of spite can be found in a chest in the Grave of Saints.
Ranking up this covenant requires wearing invading another player while wearing the Crest of Blood.

Rank 2 - Defeat 5 invading phantoms: Hush
Rank 3 - Defeat 10 invading phantoms: Blue Tearstone Ring
You must speak with Crestfallen Saulden in Majula to join the Way of the Blue. He is found at the top of the hill near a statue. Talk with him until he gives you the option to join the covenant.

Rank 2 - 20 Rat Tails: 10 smooth and silky stone

There are two places that you can join this covenant. You must speak with the Rat King in either the Grave of Saints after the Royal Rat Vanguard, or in the Doors of Pharros after the Royal Rat Authority.
To rank up this covenant, you must defeat players drawn in while trespassing in the Grave of Saints or the Doors of Pharros. You will also receive a Rat Tail for defeating each of the Royal Rat bosses.

Bell Keeper Covenant
Rank 1 - Defeat 10 Hosts or Black Phantoms: Titanite Slab
Rank 2 - Defeat 30 Hosts or Black Phantoms: Hidden Weapon sorcery (needed for Master of Sorcery)
Rank 3 - Defeat 100 Hosts or Black Phantoms: Bell Keepers Armor set
To join this covenant you must speak with the dwarf in either Belfry Luna in The Lost Bastille or Belfry Sol in the Iron Keep.
To get to Belfry Luna, start at the bonfire after the Ruin Sentinel Fight. Climb down a ladder and you will find a lock for the Pharros Lockstone. It will open up a path into Belfry Luna. Belfry Sol is in the Iron Keep, after the small bridge with two turtle knights. On your left will be a door, then a Pharros Lockstone lock. Take the unlocked path into Belfry Sol.
Ranking up this covenant requires wearing the Bell Keeper's seal and defeating players trespassing in the Belfries. Note that you can still be invaded by others, and killing these gray phantoms does not count towards your goal. An easier way to rank up this covenant is to farm NPC Black Phantom spawns. In Belfry Sol, a red phantom NPC has a chance to spawn near the bell. You can farm him by using the bonfire at the bottom of the ladder and running to his spawn point repeatedly. I've guessed that his spawn rate is about 20-30%, so this could take an hour or two, but is much faster than relying on matchmaking.

Dragon Remnants

Rank 2 - 20 Dragon Scales: Dragon Torse Stone
Rank 3 - 30 Dragon Scales: Black Dragon Greatsword

This covenant is ranked up by winning duels using the Ancient Dragon Seal summon sign. A popular spot for these duels is the bridge leading into Iron Keep. Return the Dragon Scales to Magerold of Lanafir to rank up the covenant.

Company of Champions
Rank 1 - Offer 10 awestones: Great Magic Weapon sorcery
Rank 2 - Offer 25 awestones: First Dragon Ring
Rank 3 - Offer 50 awestones: Vanquisher's Seal
This covenant can be joined in Majula. At the path that leads to Heide's Tower of Flame, run up the right along a cliff to find a giant stone tablet. Kneel at the shrine to join the covenant. As this covenant raises the difficulty of your game, you will be asked a few times if you are sure before you can join. You must at least make it to the final dialog before the trophy will unlock. Don't worry however, abandoning the covenant brings the game back down to normal difficulty.
The Company of Champions covenant raises the difficulty of your game to New Game+. Ranking up this covenant requires awestones, which can be obtained by defeating certain NPC or invading black phantoms.

Pilgrims of Dark
Rank 1 - Clear 1 Abyssal Dungeon: Resonant Soul hex
Rank 2 - Clear 3 Abyssal Dungeons and light the 3 bonfires inside: Great Resonant Soul hex
Rank 3 - Defeat the Darklurker: Xanthous Armor set and Climax hex (needed for Master of Hexes)
To join this covenant you must first play a little hide and seek with Darkdiver Grandahl. Once you have found his 3 locations, you can join this covenant.
Black Gulch- Make a small drop along the edge to find a locked door. To open it, drop down a little further and defeat the two giants for the key.
Shaded Woods- Run past the hill leading to Scorpioness Najka and you can find a small drop into a pit.
Drangleic Castle- In the large room after the first bonfire, open the door in the back and to the left. The doors can be opened by killing a statue enemy near the door.
This covenant is very different from the others, as it is basically a set of short mini dungeons and a boss fight. The entrances can be found in the 3 spots you found Darkdiver Grandahl and opened up by offering a human effigy. In each dungeon, simply defeat the enemies, light the bonfire, and drop down the hole at the end. Note that if you die, you must offer another human effigy to open the portal again. At the end of the third dungeon, you will fight against the Darklurker. After his defeat, speak with Darkdiver Grandahl for your reward. Be sure to bring the Darklurker soul you get to Straid of Olaphis for the Lifedrain Patch hex, required for Master of Hexes.

Curious Map Light all flames on the map in Majula |

The description for this trophy is a bit misleading. In order to get it, you must inherit the equipment of Cartographer Cale. He can be found in the Forest of Fallen Giants and will give you the key to the mansion in Majula. In the basement of the mansion, kill the skeleton and Cale will be standing at the map next time you visit.
All of the flames will be lit after you defeat the final boss and go into the post game. Simply run in and speak with him, and he'll give you his equipment and this trophy.
Warning: The trophy is missable - If you kill Cartographer Cale, you cannot get this trophy until you do another full playtrough.

There are many NPCs that you can find in the world that will come back to Majula after having spoken to them. After the last one joins, go to Majula and you'll unlock the trophy. Note that this trophy is missable, if you kill any NPC before they all arrive, you will have to wait until the next playthrough.

Moonlight Greatsword Inherit Benhart of Jugo's equipment |
|
|
In order to inherit Benhart's equipment, you must summon him into 3 boss fights and make sure he survives. After that, speak with him in the Memory of Orro for his equipment. Duplicates will count, so feel free to use bonfire ascetics to repeat the fights you find easy.
He can be summoned for:
-Prowling Magus in Brightstone Cave Tseldora
Speak with him where you unpetrify Rosabeth after you have done so. His summon sign is in one of the other tents near the bonfire.
-Looking Glass Knight in Drangleic Castle
Speak with him near the bonfire and his summon sign will be right in front the the mist door.
-Giant Lord in Memory of Jeige
Speak with him at the crows nest after the Pursuer and his summon sign will be at the bottom of the stairs before the mist door.
-Throne Watcher, Throne Defender and Final Boss in Throne of Want
His summon sign is right in front of the mist door. When I did this fight, it didn't count. I don't know if it is glitched or there is a detail I missed.

Recent patch update: Several people have mentioned that this trophy can be unlocked simply by exhausting Lucatiel's dialog at every opportunity. This is likely a bug and may be patched in the future, but it's worth being aware of for now.

Speak with her at the bonfire and her summon sign will be in a house next the the shorcut gate.

Smith for Life Inherit Steady Hand McDuff's equipment |
|
|
Steady Hand McDuff can be found in the Lost Bastille. In order to open up his shop, you must find the Dull Ember in the Iron Keep. You must spend about 15,000 souls on upgrading your gear with him (buying items doesn't count). Then talk with him and he will give you a blacksmith hammer and this trophy.
If you are having trouble finding him, there are two ways. Near the tower for the Ruin Sentinel fight, there is a Halberd knight standing at the top of a set of stairs with a barrel. Roll this barrel down the stairs and set it off near the cracked wall. This will open up a bonfire and McDuff's Workshop. Alternatively, you can use the Bastille Key to open the nearby door. The Bastille Key is in Belfry Luna after the Gargoyles.
The Dull Ember can be found in the large open room of Iron Keep. When you first enter, a sniper will be firing at you on your right. Make your way around and you can jump down to the platform under him, where the Dull Ember rests.

Reflections on Disembodiment Inherit equipment from the head of Vengarl |
|
|
The head of Vengarl can be found in the Shaded Woods. In the heavy fog area, hug the left side and you will find a clearing. In the rubble you will find the Head of Vengarl. Talk to him until he gives you his helm and this trophy.

If you have difficulty getting this trophy, I would be very impressed!
