The first goal in the FIFA Women’s World Cup™ was scored by China PR’s Ma Li in the 22nd minute of the tournament’s opening match between the hosts and Norway on 16 November 1991.

Ma Li gave the Chinese a 1-0 lead going into half-time in Guangzhou, and the hosts ultimately ran away with the match as it finished 4-0. China PR once again are a part of the Women's World Cup Opening Match this year, when they face hosts Canada on Saturday 6 June at Edmonton's Commonwealth Stadium.
