  • At the age of 26, German midfielder Nadine Kessler ended an incredible 2014 by being crowned FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year. The captain of Wolfsburg succeeds fellow German international Nadine Angerer – last year’s winner.

    In 2014, Kessler showcased her talents as a pillar for her club, captaining them to the German women’s Bundesliga and UEFA Champions League titles. Those achievements helped her earn the UEFA Best Women's Player in Europe Award for 2013/14. Kessler also helped Germany qualify for the FIFA Women’s World Cup™.

  • Still capable of running rings around opponents and scoring wonder goals, Marta is proving with each passing season that durability is another of her attributes. First chosen as FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year in 2006, the Brazilian ace finds herself nominated for the prize once again, eight years on. In 2014, Marta defended the colours of two Swedish clubs. Earlier in the year she starred for Tyreso FF as they reached the final of the UEFA Women’s Champions League, but not even her two goals could prevent Wolfsburg from prevailing in a 4-3 thriller. Then in June, she signed for FC Rosengard, with whom she won her fifth Swedish league title only two months later.

  • USA’s all-time leading scorer Abby Wambach illustrated her importance to her country when she jumpstarted their Canada 2015 qualifying campaign with a headed goal against Trinidad and Tobago in the CONCACAF Women’s Championship. Domestically, she scored ten goals in 16 appearances for the Western New York Flash. The Stars and Stripes have every right to put their hopes in the FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year 2012 as she has scored 22 goals in 29 matches during major competitions in her career. Wambach will look to add an elusive FIFA Women’s World Cup title to her sterling list of honours. “I’ve never won one, so I’m pretty determined and hope that the chips fall in our favour.”
