CHENNAI: Thousands of fans young and old pushed and shoved each other to get a last glimpse of 'Aachi' Manorama on Sunday at her residence in T Nagar. Actors, directors, writers, producers, politicians and well-wishers thronged in the hundreds to pay their last respects to the legendary actor who passed away at 78 on Saturday night due to cardiac arrest.
The T Nagar residence of Manorama, located close to Sivaji Ganesan's home, was full of tearful friends and fans from early in the morning. Film stars who came to pay floral tributes included Rajinikanth, Sarathkumar, 'Delhi' Ganesh, Karthik, Illayaraja, Vairamuthu, S Ve Sekar, Ajith, Vijay, Vishal, Karthi, Vijaykumar, Bhagyaraj, Koundamani Parthiban, Raadhika, 'Kalaipuli' Thanu, T Rajender, Simbu, Vimal, Vikraman, and Pandiarajan.
Chief minister J Jayalalithaa paid floral tributes to Manorama, who has acted in 1,500 films and more than 1,000 theatre productions. "She is an elder sister to me in the film industry. She always addressed me as 'Ammu' and I called her Manorama," Jayalalithaa said. "I cannot forget the days when we used to visit each other's homes. on days when there were no film shoots."
Other political leaders who paid last respects included DMK chief M Karunanidhi, Tamil Maanila Congress president G K Vasan, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi president Thirumavalavan and BJP state president Tamilisai Soundararajan.
Manorama, a Padmashree and Kalaimaamani recipient, earned a place in the Guinness Book for acting in more than 1000 films. She last acted in the movie 'Singam' in 2010.
A classmate from Manorama's school days also paid tribute and many transgenders mourned her death, remembering the actor for her contribution to the community. A public that so loved the versatile actor's mourned her demise, with people lining the streets as the funeral procession passed through them.Manorama had one son, Boopathi. She did not remarry after her marriage with S M Ramanathan ended in divorce after two years.
Filmmakers called off shoots on Sunday to mourn the death of the actor who served as vice-president of South Indian Artistes Association.
