SURAT: A 38-year-old farm labourer committed suicide after murdering seven family members early on Sunday at Upli Faliya of Kosbara village near Dharampur in Valsad. The villagers did not come to know about the murder and suicide at night since the house is located on hill. Entire tribal region of Dharampur was in deep shock on coming to know about the shocking incident.
Shravan Kanat, 38, his wife Shanta alias Savli 36, daughters Yamuna, 19, Hemku, 17, son Akshay, 17, daughter Gisila, 14, son Viral, 12, and grand-daughter, Priti, 1, were found dead at their residence on Sunday morning. Pritis is daughter of Yamuna. Police were alerted by neighbours and relatives of Kanat when they spotted the bodies in morning.
On being alerted police teams arrived at the spot and examined the house. Preliminary investigation revealed that the deceased were murdered at late Saturday night. The bodies were sent for post-mortem and police are yet to receive the report. The village is around 100 km away from Valsad city and is an interior tribal village.
Throats of the family members were slit using some sharp weapon while Kanat hanged self using a rope. Villagers and relatives informed police that Kanat was mentally unstable and he murdered the family in that condition.
