Ordinary Movie Review
TNN, Mar 17, 2012, 09.22PM ISTCRITIC'S RATING: Revised from to 3, based on popular feedback
Cast: Kunchako Boban, Biju Menon,Ann Augustine,Shritha
Direction: Sugeeth
Genre: Drama
Duration: 2 hours 30 minutes
Story: Ordinary shows how the conductor and driver of a lone bus to a distant village happen to share a close relation with the villagers.
Movie Review: There is nothing extra-ordinary about 'Ordinary'. The film knows its limits, offers lively moments, bewitching visuals and concludes with a neatly choreographed climax.
Not often do directors make a graceful debut as Sugeeth does with Ordinary. He has a simple tale and his characters emote well. The camaraderie of Kunchako Boban and Biju Menon and their bond with the villagers of Gavi has freshness and is in tune with the film's narrative style.
Boban sheds his chocolate-boy mould and has a very conventional character role. His character's name 'Iravikutty Pillai' ensures that he is at the receiving end of various comic one liners, be it Biju Menon or Baburaj.
The humour is pleasing and warrants loud laughter at times. The drunkard played by Baburaj proudly introduces himself to a foreigner as 'Gavi boy' in sloshed, broken tones. Biju Menon as the driver Suku is lovable for his banter in hurried, Palakkad dialect.
Faisal Ali's camera sweeps through the wonderful lush greenery of Gavi. Mist-drenched valleys, sun-lit grassy lanes, wet, winding roads make it a visual treat. When the plot turns, the angles assume intensity.
The story moves along so easily that it demands some tense moments and the director handles it carefully with a touch of emotions. The script by Nishad and Manu breathes simplicity and clubs events and characters with ease.
After Unnam's debacle, Asif Ali returns yet again as a frustrated youth while exercising remarkable restraint throughout the film. Debutante Shritha has a charming role of the village belle Kalyani.
Vidyasagar's tunes add life to this scenic locale-story.
