PALANPUR: The Mehsana police have booked Vipul Chaudhary, the former chairman of Mehsana District Co-operative Milk Producers' Union Ltd and 19 others for their alleged involvement in Rs 17.26 crore sugar purchase scam.
The accused also include suspended managing director Nishith Baxi, two former officials and 16 directors. The purchase was made during Chaudhary's tenure as the Dudhsagar Dairy chairman.
According to the police complaint filed late on Tuesday night, the dairy had purchased one lakh tones of sugar from a particular agency at rates higher than the prevalent market prices. While the market price was Rs 30 per kg, the dairy brought the stock at Rs 47.50 kg, the complaint states
The case was registered at 'B' division police station on a complaint lodged by registrar of co-operative societies, Mehsana, PS Upadhyay.
