NEW DELHI: Smartphone heavyweights Samsung Electronics, Apple and Google are set to engage in a battle royale over the next few months to capture a larger share of premium phone users, with their latest models breathing new life into the high-end segment.

In the fray are South Korea's Samsung, which expanded its lead over Apple in January-August, followed at a distance by Taiwan's HTC. Sony, No. 3 in the segment last year, has dropped off the radar, data from Counterpoint Technology Market Research showed.

Following up on the launch of its flagship Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge in March, Samsung introduced Galaxy S6 edge+ in August and Galaxy Note 5 in September. Google has unveiled two devices -- LG Nexus 5X and Huawei Nexus 6P -- both premium smartphones, hitting the market just days before the iPhone 6S and iPhone6S Plus go on sale on Friday.

While their prices are different -- with Google's latest devices the lowest -- iPhones have aspirational quotient and Samsung has a head-start and models that have been critically acclaimed, said analysts. "The launches will ignite excitement in the segment," said Vishal Tripathi, research director at Gartner. "Premium smartphone is a critical part of phone makers' portfolio, including those that lead the market, because consumer demand to upgrade to the next new model is growing, although slowly, in India."

The premium phone entries are timed perfectly with the festive season, a quarter in which handset makers typically notch up their highest sales. India is among the fastest-growing smartphone markets in the world and is poised to outpace the US as the second-largest market, after China, by 2017. According to International Data Corporation, 26.5 million smartphones were shipped to India in the second quarter of 2015, up 44% from 18.4 million in the same period in 2014.

Growth in the country's smartphone market comes mainly from the affordable segment — priced between Rs 8,000 and Rs 15,000 — and the entry-level segment, which brings in the new smartphone users. Big-ticket introductions are set to reinvigorate the segment. Premium smartphone shipments fell 26% to 1.77 million units in 2014 from a year earlier and climbed back up to 1.97 million as of August this year, according to CyberMedia Research.

"This past year, it grew at about 41-42%, so the market is huge and getting bigger," said David Shapiro, Global Director of Chrome and Android Marketing at Google. "We have a stronger high-end portfolio till date with seven smartphones, including Galaxy S and Note series. This is our best step forward this year, which will be visible in our market dominance," said Asim Warsi, Samsung India's vice president for marketing (mobile and IT).

Apple didn't respond to emails seeking comment.

Google and Apple's new phones will be followed by the launch of Sony's Xperia Z5 on October 21 and by Microsoft's Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL. All these phones will be in premium segment.

The premium segment accounted for 3% of smartphone sales by volume in the first eight months of this year, up from 2% a year earlier. The number of premium devices sold this year till August more than doubled from a year ago. In terms of value, the segment's share widened to 23% of the overall smartphone market this year from 15% in January-August 2014.

"We estimate the new launches will expand the volume of the flagship segment," said Tarun Pathak, a senior analyst at Counterpoint Research.

Samsung and Apple have been taking turns at leading the market in the face of challengers such as China's Xiaomi, which offer comparable devices at lower prices. Samsung's S5 introduced in April last year was not well received by consumers as there was nothing substantial to differentiate it from the S4.

Apple led the segment with a 46% volume share in the January to August 2014 period, followed by Samsung with 34% and Sony with 12%. However, the tables turned in 2015.

Samsung expanded its share to 52% in January to August 2015 on the back of devices launched since February.

Apple lost some shine as its share dropped to 40% while HTC managed to claw up to 4%.

Analysts foresee little change in the market in the short to medium term.

10 best smartphones coming to India soon

Indian smartphone market is all set to dazzle this festive season, with top smartphone makers like Apple, Sony, Lenovo and search giant Google ready to launch their latest smartphones in the Indian market.

So, here's over to 10 top smartphones set to make India debut.

Apple iPhone 6S, 6S Plus

The first Apple smartphones to feature 3D Touch technology, iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus are coming to India on October 16, within a month of its global launch.

While there is no increment in screen size in iPhone 6S (4.7-inch HD) and iPhone 6S (5.5-inch Full HD) compared to last year’s models, the integrated 3D Touch display allows them to differentiate between types of touches and taps in preloaded apps as well as on the homescreen.

Both iPhones are powered by the new A9 processor with 2GB RAM and run on iOS 9 operating system. They come in 3 storage variants: 16, 64, and 128GB; there is no support for microSD cards for storage expansions.

The rear cameras of the two smartphones have 12MP resolution, backed by dual-tone dual-LED flash, while the front cameras have 5MP sensors. Along with the standard silver, space gray and gold colours, iPhone 6S and 6S Plus also come in a new rose gold hue.

Google Nexus 5X, 6P

Google Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P smartphones are scheduled to launch in India on October 13. Some key features the two smartphones share are USB Type-C, fingerprint sensor, 12.3MP camera with large 1.55-micron sensor and Android Marshmallow.

The LG-made Nexus 5X comes with a 64-bit Snapdragon 808 processor with a 2 GB RAM unit. The 5X has a 5.2-inch 1080p display protected by Gorilla Glass 3 and a 12MP rear camera with 4K video support. It comes in 16GB and 32GB variants and draws power from a 2,700 mAh battery.

Google Nexus 6P, made by Huawei, features a 5.7-inch screen (1440p resolution), Snapdragon 810 processor with 3GB RAM, 8MP front camera and 3,450mAh battery. It comes in three storage options (32GB, 64GB and 128GB).

Sony Xperia Z5 Premium

Sony Xperia Z5 Premium is the world’s firs smartphone with a 4K display (3840x2160p), which has four times the resolution of an HD screen. The Z5 Premium upscales content to 4K, enhancing any native or third party videos or photos so users can view Netflix, YouTube or their own videos in 4K.

The upcoming Sony flagship smartphone sports a 5.5-inch 4K Triluminos display, runs on Android 5.1.1 (Lollipop) and is powered by the octa-core Snapdragon 810 processor with 3GB RAM. It has 32GB internal storage, supports microSD cards of up to 200GB capacity, is compatible with 4G networks, and sports a 23MP rear camera with LED flash and 5.1MP front camera.

The smartphone, which has a 3,430mAh battery, supports Qualcomm’s QuickCharge 2.0 technology, which enables users to get 5.5 hours usage with just 10 minutes of charging with a certified Quick Charge 2.0 charger.

Sony Xperia Z5 Premium, which holds the IP65/68 water-resistance rating, is expected to go on sale in November this year in the country.

Lenovo Vibe S1

Lenovo Vibe S1 is the world’s first smartphone to sport two cameras in the front. The handset has an 8MP and a 2MP camera setup for shooting selfies; the former captures the image while the latter adds the depth-of-field effect to the image by blurring the background. While the front camera setup of Vibe S1 is quite unique, Lenovo has gone with a pretty standard 13MP camera, backed by dual-tone flash, on the back.

The Lenovo Vibe S1 smartphone features a 5-inch full-HD (1080x1920) display and runs on Android 5.0 (Lollipop). Powered by 64-bit octa-core MediaTek MT6752 processor and 3GB RAM, the phone comes with 32GB internal storage. Users can slip in microSD cards of up to 128GB capacity for more storage space.

This metal-body smartphone measures 7.8mm in thickness, weighs 132 grams and packs a 2,50mAh battery. Lenovo Vibe S1 will be available in Pearl White and Midnight Blue colours and supports 4G.

According to Lenovo, Vibe S1 will hit international markets in November at $299. India is one of the priority markets for Lenovo, so it is likely that the smartphone will be launched in the country soon.

Sony Xperia Z5, Z5 Compact

Xperia Z5 and Z5 Compact are two top-end Sony smartphones headed to the Indian market, likely to be launched in October. Like the flagship Xperia Z5 Premium, the two models are water-resistant, but do not have 4K display resolution.
