KOLKATA: Keeping up with the Puja spirit, Kolkata Port Trust (KoPT) has undertaken repair of the Taratala Road on a war-footing.
According to an official, nearly 90 potholes along the six-km stretch from Taratala crossing to Ramnagar have already been repaired. Thorough repair of the arterial Taratala Road will be completed within three months at Rs. 3.9 crore, the official added. This will leave only those stretches where CESC and KMC are engaged in the maintenance of underground cables.
The other roads in the Kidderpore area that are being repaired by KoPT are Hyde Road, Circular Garden Reach (CGR) Road, Sonai Road and Coal Dock Road. This work is expected to be completed by the end of March, 2016. Several stretches along these roads are in bad shape and many accidents have been reported over the last few mo (nths. Recently, locals also staged a demonstration, demanding repair work by KoPT.
"We are repairing the roads that are primarily used by vehicles moving in and out of the port. Other vehicles will also benefit from this. For the other roads, we have approached agencies like the KMC and KMDA. It should be clear that we have limited resources and can't take responsibility for all roads in the area. We expect other agencies to come forward and improve the situation," said RPS Kahlon, chairman, KoPT. The road repairs will help residents of Kidderpore, Taratala and Garden Reach who has to travel to central Kolkata.
