Cashier stole Dhs1.5 million from bank to help treat his sick father.

A bank cashier has admitted stealing Dhs1.5 million from his company to treat his ill father.

The Arab man and his manager, also Arab, are on trial at Abu Dhabi Criminal Court accused of embezzling Dhs3.5 million from an Abu Dhabi bank.

Official documents showed that the men stole the cash from the bank more than a year ago when they used their positions to falsify financial figures they entered in the bank's accounting system.

Prosecutors said the men took the cash in two different phases with one on April, 21 2014 while the second theft was carried out on May 21, 2014.

The management found out about the theft after noticing a fiscal deficit through the accounting electronic system, whereby a deposit of Dhs3.5 million was made to the Islamic account to falsify its appearance on a business account.

When the pair were questioned by their bosses about the missing cash during internal investigations they denied falsifying information to steal the money.

In court, the manager, who is also the first defendant in the case, claimed that there was a technical error in the bank's electronic information system.

The cashier however, admitted taking the money after they transferred the Dhs3.5 million electronically from one bank account to others with the coordination of the manager who was his boss.

The man said he took Dhs1.5 million from the total cash because he was in urgent need of money to treat his ill father.

He also told court that the manager took Dhs2 million.

The trial was adjourned until March 28.
