New Year Honours 2013

Nine New Zealanders have been made Knights or Dames Companion in the 2013 New Year Honours list announced today.  The list recognises the achievements and contributions of 191 people.   

Long-serving High Court judge, Justice Dame Judith Potter, and educationalist and publisher Dame Wendy Pye, were appointed Dames Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit and businessman Sir Owen Glenn, local government leader Sir Bob Harvey, broadcaster Sir Paul Holmes, Court of Appeal President Justice Sir Mark O’Regan, businessman Sir Julian Smith, Māori leader Sir Mark Solomon and equestrian rider, Sir Mark Todd, were appointed as Knights Companion.

Others to be honoured included former Reserve Bank Governor Dr Alan Bollard and Māori academic, Professor Linda Tuhiwai Smith, who were made Companions of the New Zealand Order of Merit.  Actor Rāwiri Paratene, and former Lincoln University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Roger Field, were made Officers of the New Zealand Order of Merit, whilst Urban Search and Rescue leader Jim Stuart-Black and meteorologist Bob McDavitt were made Members of the New Zealand Order of Merit.   Former senior police officer Superintendent Paula Rose was one of six New Zealanders to be made a Companion of the Queen’s Service Order.

Several New Zealanders who excelled at the 2012 London Olympics and Paralympics were recognised in the Honours list.  In addition to the knighthood for Olympian equestrian rider Sir Mark Todd, others Olympians to be honoured included rowers  Hamish Bond, Nathan Cohen, Joseph Sullivan and Eric Murray, kayaker Lisa Carrington and sailors Jo Aleh and Olivia Powrie, who were made Members of the New Zealand Order of Merit.  Paralympian tandem cyclists Laura Fairweather and Phillipa Gray were also made Members of the New Zealand Order of Merit.
