New First World War galleries
The First World War Galleries are open to the public from 1 December 2014, after a major redevelopment to commemorate the centenary.
Commemorative tapestry commission
To mark the centenary of the First World War, the Memorial has commissioned a significant new commemorative tapestry.
Our vision
Director of the Australian War Memorial, Dr Brendan Nelson describes his vision for the Memorial’s commemoration of the centenary of the First World War.
From 2014 the world will commemorate 100 years since the First World War. The conflict touched the lives of nearly every Australian and its effects are still evident today. During the period 2014–18 we will commemorate, remember, and learn from those who sacrificed their lives during those four years of fighting 1914–18.
What the Memorial is doing for the centenary
The Australian War Memorial will continue to host a variety of new public programs and events throughout the centenary period. Its new First World War exhibition Australia in the Great War, opened in the redeveloped galleries on 1 December 2014. A year in review
The year 2015 was a momentous one for the Memorial, and we are preparing ourselves for an even busier time in 2016 as we continue to commemorate the Centenary of the First World War and other major events in Australia’s military history.
