Planar Magnetic Technology

Most headphones use inexpensive, mass-produced dynamic cone drivers in standard sizes from just a few OEM/ODM producers and build their headphones around them. But dynamic cone drivers have serious inherent design limitations that can cause slow transient response and severe break up modes with uneven frequency response. The dynamic driver assembly has lots of glue joints that can degrade over time and cause the sound to get progressively worse.

Cutting-edge planar magnetic headphones

Audeze headphones employ cutting-edge planar magnetic headphone technology for more accurate, high-quality audiophile sound. Our high-end planar magnetic technology connects you to your favorite artists and musicians as if you were right there at the original event.

Planar technology diaphragms thinner than a human hair

Good things come in (very) thin packages. One of the most important elements of planar magnetic headphones is the diaphragm. Our oversize diaphragms materials are ultra-thin and custom-manufactured in-house to exacting specifications using proprietary processes and equipment.

The original diaphragm material was developed for NASA space applications; they needed strong, lightweight films that could be carried into space and survive the radiation and harsh environment. Civilian technology transfer allowed Audeze to acquire this special material and further refine it along with a range of new techniques to handle the new film.

Our LCD-4 features one of the thinnest diaphragms in a production headphone anywhere in the world. Developing the new nano-scale diaphragm meant creating a new formulation from scratch. Even measuring the diaphragm’s thickness during production was difficult. Our engineers kept busy making it work as we developed new measurement techniques.

For the voice-coil traces we employ vacuum deposition to create a thin metal layer on top of the film increasing flexibility. Audeze developed a proprietary slow-deposit method that moves the build time of each diaphragm out to two weeks. The film is micro-etched to create the voice-coil for production. Our new nano-scale film has an extremely low dielectric constant mass, it’s very strong and highly elastic weighing less than the air it displaces!

In house, high-quality custom-cast and treated magnets

Our planar magnetic headphones use proprietary, custom-cast magnets placed on one or both sides of the diaphragm to create a powerful magnetic field. Our latest implementation, the Double-Fluxor™ Array, achieves the most powerful magnetic flux ever created to control the diaphragm with near-zero distortion.

Audeze designs each transducer from scratch allowing us to introduce a wide variety of innovative planar magnetic designs. To ensure our headphones perform to our exacting standards we use custom-cast magnets of proprietary design.

Fluxor™ Magnetic Technology

Patented Fluxor Magnetic Technology, introduced in the EL-8, delivers nearly double the magnetic flux density of the highest-grade neodymium magnetic circuits available. This remarkable achievement results in reduced weight with greater efficiency to work better with mobile devices.

The Double Fluxor Arrays in the LCD-4 yield an incredibly high magnetic induction of 1.5 Tesla that sets the record for the most powerful open magnetic circuit ever created.

Uniforce™ voice-coil technology

Patented Uniforce voice-coils, introduced in the EL-8, employ an industry first: variable trace widths that effectively captures variations in the magnetic field within the magnetic gaps by equalizing the forces of the individual traces. This innovative technique creates a uniform driving force across the entire diaphragm’s surface resulting in dramatically reduced distortion, higher resolution and improved imaging.

Fazor™ technology

Patent-pending Fazor technology, first introduced in the LCD Collection, is standard equipment in all Audeze headphones. Fazors are specially-designed acoustical elements positioned on either side of the magnetic arrays to properly manage sound waves passing through them. They enhance transparency by affecting the sound waves generated by large planar diaphragms. A few of the benefits include extended high-frequency extension, better phase response, and lower lower distortion resulting in enhanced imaging and a spacious, more convincing out-of-head imaging.
