A 16-year-old boy wasn’t saying much after he was shot in the hand during what was described as an Internet transaction early Thursday in East Topeka, police said.

The incident was reported about 1 a.m. Thursday after the youth walked into the emergency department of a local hospital with a gunshot wound that wasn’t considered to be life-threatening.

Lt. Steve Roth, of the Topeka Police Department, said medical staff at the hospital notified police upon the youth’s arrival.

Roth said officers then went to the hospital and interviewed the teen, who said he had been shot in the 3200 block of S.E. 6th during an “Internet sales action.” The assailant was described as a white male with long, blond-brown hair who fled the scene in a van.

The shooting victim “did not wish to cooperate further,” Roth said.

As a result, Roth said, “We don’t have a whole lot to work with.”
