The Topeka Police Department is asking for feedback from the community as it undergoes recertification from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies.

A public information session will be held at 7 p.m. Monday at the Law Enforcement Center, 320 S. Kansas Ave. The public is invited to offer comments, Lt. Colleen Stuart said.

People can also provide feedback by calling (785) 368-9551 from 1-3 p.m. Monday.

Public statements and phone comments are limited to 10 minutes and must address the agency’s ability to comply with CALEA’s standards. According to CALEA’s website, the accreditation program examines a range of topics, including ethics, use of reasonable force, recruiting and training. Details about CALEA’s standards are available at the Law Enforcement Center.

A team of out-of-state CALEA assessors were set to be in Topeka on Sunday to examine the department’s policies, management, operations and support services. Stuart said the team would visit, review written materials and interview people, then report to the commission.

If granted, this will be TPD’s seventh CALEA award.

Accreditation lasts three years, during which the department submits annual reports showing compliance with CALEA’s standards, Stuart said.

Those who want to submit written comments about the Topeka Police Department can write to: Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies Inc., 13575 Heathcote Boulevard, Suite 320, Gainesville, VA 20155.
