Wheatfield Village and the proposed construction of a courthouse restroom are among matters local governing bodies plan to take up Monday.
Shawnee County Commissioners Bob Archer, Kevin Cook and Shelly Buhler plan to consider seeking bids to construct a restroom that’s compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act in the courtroom chambers area for Shawnee County District Court Division 3.
The proposed move is among items on the agenda when commissioners meet at 9 a.m. in their chambers in Room B-11 of the County Courthouse, 200 S.E. 7th.
The Topeka City Council will then hold a special meeting to discuss the proposed Wheatfield Village development at 5 p.m. Monday in its chambers at 214 S.E. 8th, according to the city’s website.
The city’s governing body, consisting of the nine council members and Mayor Larry Wolgast, will be asked to go behind closed doors into executive session to discuss the matter, that website indicated.
The city council won’t meet this coming Tuesday because of the municipal general election, which will take place that day.
County commissioners plan to consider authorizing facilities maintenance director Bill Kroll to solicit proposals from anyone interested in contracting with the county — at an estimated cost not to exceed $40,000 — to construct an ADA-compliant restroom in Suite 410 at the county courthouse, 200 S.E. 7th.
Commissioners voted earlier this year to renovate the District 3 courtroom, Room 410, where District Court Judge Teresa L. Watson presides.
Knoll told commissioners in a recent memorandum that as design and cost estimate work for that project proceeded, “it was determined that there simply was not enough money to complete the courtroom renovations and a restroom addition from the courtroom project budget. There was also discussion during design regarding the need for the restroom addition at this time as well as the cost/benefit of what is effectively, a private ADA restroom.”
Commissioners also plan Monday to:
— Recognize Terry Bertels, deputy director of Shawnee County Parks and Recreation, who is retiring.
— Consider Kroll’s request that they reject a previously approved bid and instead award the bid to Torgeson Electrical to make electrical service upgrades at the Shawnee County North Annex, 1515 N.W. Saline, at a cost of $6,474 to facilitate the installation of new vehicle lifts recently purchased by the sheriff’s office.
— Consider paying an initial past service cost balance of $379,954 to the Kansas Police and Firemen’s Retirement System using $150,000 from the sheriff’s office budget and up to $240,000 from the 2017 general expenses contingency budget. Shawnee County would realize significant savings by exercising the payoff option, administrative services director Betty Greiner told commissioners in a recent memorandum.
