Big opening game yields honor roll scores for Springer

Clausing, Wilson toss perfect games at West Ridge Lanes

Michelle Springer used a strong start to claim two spots on the city bowling season honor roll last week at West Ridge Lanes.

 

Bowling in the 6 p.m. Sunday Mixer League, Springer shot 288-223-196 – 707 to grab ninth place on the series leaderboard and fourth on the games list for the 2016-17 league season.

Springer is the women’s season leader with a 771 series at West Ridge and also ranks eighth and 10th with scores of 709 and 706 at Gage Bowl. She currently holds five of the top 10 games, with additional scores of 299 (second), 290 (third), 277 (eighth) and 268 (10th).

Ashton Bigger and Russ Wilson had to settle for second-10 rankings while leading the men. Bigger shot 276-255-256 – 787 (tied for 11th) in the Tuesday Night Mixer League, while Wilson rolled 300-267-214 – 781 (17th) the same night in the Lenahan League, both at West Ridge. Wilson matched Zac Wenrich with his second perfect game this season.

Brandon Clausing joined the 300 club the night before Wilson with a 300-211-164 – 675 outing in the BNSF League at West Ridge. There have been 18 men’s 300’s this season.

The senior ranks yielded several honor roll scores last week. Robert Raye claimed third place among the men with a 246-211-269 – 726 series at Gage, while Dean Porter tied for 11th with a 274 game at West Ridge.

The senior women were even more productive, with RoxAnn Artzer-Crowder moving into second with a 238-164-235 – 637 series at West Ridge, Barb Tidwell grabbing third with a 182-226-222 – 630 series at Gage and Barb Huske tying Crowder for sixth with a 214-204-202 – 620 series at West Ridge. Crowder’s 238 game ranks sixth.

Whitney Prockish paced the youth with a 216-256-179 – 651 performance at Gage that earned her sixth-place rankings for series and games.

  • Topekans Leonard Harding and Doug McCollum topped a field of 175 teams to win the doubles championship at the 70th annual American Legion State Tournament, which was held the past three weekends at Gage Bowl. In addition, Harding placed second in singles out of 350 entries.
  • The 79th annual Topeka USBC Women’s Bowling Association City Tournament wraps up this weekend at West Ridge Lanes. Leaders after the first weekend are listed below.
