Local sports briefs: Jazz Sweet, Nebraska volleyball sweep K-State

Former Shawnee Heights star Jazz Sweet (pictured) had nine kills for the Nebraska Cornhuskers volleyball team (6-2) on Friday while former Cair Paravel star Peyton Williams had five kills for the Kansas State Wildcats (6-6).

The Kansas State volleyball team was swept 25-22, 25-11, 25-16 by No. 10 Nebraska on Friday in Omaha, Neb. Former Shawnee Heights star Jazz Sweet had nine kills for the Cornhuskers (6-2) while former Cair Paravel star Peyton Williams had five kills for the Wildcats (6-6).

WASHBURN SOCCER FALLS TO EMPORIA STATE: The Washburn soccer team fell to rival Emporia State 2-1 on Friday at Yager Stadium. ESU (4-1-0) took a 2-0 lead at the half as Kennedy Hoffman and Ashlynn Summar each scored goals. WU’s Paige Swanson cut the deficit in half with a goal in the 81st minute, but the Bods (2-2-1) couldn’t get closer than that.

ROADRUNNERS LOSE SEASON OPENER TO ICERAYS: The Topeka RoadRunners lost 4-1 in their season opener to the Corpus Christi IceRays on Friday at Landon Arena. The IceRays led 2-1 at the end of the second period before tacking on two more goals in the third. Topeka’s goal was scored by Chad Hillebrand in the second period.

WASHBURN VOLLEYBALL SPLITS FIRST DAY OF ARKANSAS TECH INVITATIONAL: The Washburn volleyball team split the first day of the Arkansas Tech Invitational on Friday in Russellville, Ark. WU (7-3) beat Christian Brothers 3-1 (23-25, 25-11, 25-16, 25-17) for the program’s 1,000th victory before dropping a five-set match against Harding, falling 25-22, 12-25, 27-29, 25-17 and 10-15).

WU sophomore Erica Montgomery had a combined 31 kills in the two matches.
