Washburn volleyball splits first day of WU Invitational

Washburn volleyball’s Erica Montgomery goes for a block during Washburn’s season opener on Friday. The Ichabods went 1-1 on the first day of the WU Invitational.

The Washburn volleyball team split the first day of the WU Invitational, dropping its opener 3-1 (25-22, 22-25, 25-16, 25-19) to Arkansas Tech before rebounding with a 3-0 victory (26-24, 25-13, 25-14) over East Central on Friday in Lee Arena.

Washburn hit just .032 in the first match. Makayla Maxwell had 10 kills and Shayla Conner had 33 assists and 14 digs.

In the second match, Erica Montgomery and Maxwell each had 14 kills, while Genna Berg added 10 kills. Faith Rottinghaus recorded 24 digs and Kelsey Gordon had seven blocks.

The Ichabods will play Western State Colorado at 11 a.m. on Saturday before facing Missouri-St. Louis at 5:30 p.m.
