Stories
These are instructions for sharing to your personal story on Facebook. You can also share stories for Pages or events. Learn more about Page stories or event stories.
Your story is a way of sharing a photo or video with your friends or followers that will be available for 24 hours.
You can share to your story from a computer, the Facebook app for iOS or Android, Facebook Lite, or the Messenger app.
When you add a photo or video to your Facebook story, it can be seen across both Facebook and Messenger. You can always control who can see your story.
To share to your story:
  1. From your News Feed, go to the Stories section in the top right and click + Add to Your Story.
  2. Type an update, or click Photo/Video to upload a photo or video from your computer.
  3. Next to Your Story, you can click the audience selector (example: Public or Friends) to choose who can see your story.
  4. Click Share.

To add music to your story on Facebook, you must use the Facebook app for iOS or Android.
Add music to a photo or video
To add music to your story on Facebook:
  1. Open the Facebook app for iOS or Android.
  2. Tap in the top left of your screen to open the camera.
  3. Tap at the bottom of your screen to take a photo or video, or tap to upload a photo from your camera roll.
  4. Tap , then tap MUSIC.
  5. Find a song. You can tap Search music to find a specific song, or tap a genre that you like. To preview a song before you add it to your story, tap . When you find your song, tap Add.
  6. Drag the slider left or right to select a clip from the song, then tap Done in the top right.
  7. The song will appear as a sticker on your story. You can tap to change the style of the sticker, or pinch to change the size.
  8. Tap Next. Select your audience, then tap Share Now.
Choose music before you record a video
You can also select a song before you record a video for your story:
  1. Open the Facebook app for iOS or Android.
  2. Tap in the top left of your screen to open the camera.
  3. At the bottom of your screen, swipe left and tap MUSIC.
  4. Find a song. You can tap Search music to find a specific song, or tap a genre that you like. To preview a song before you add it to your story, tap . When you find your song, tap Add.
  5. Drag the slider left or right to select a clip from the song, then tap Start to record your video.
  6. Once you record your video, the song will appear as a sticker on your story. You can tap to change the style of the sticker, or pinch to change the size.
  7. Tap Next. Select your audience, then tap Share Now.

To add a sticker to your story, use the Facebook mobile app for iOS or Android.
When you share a photo or video to your story on Facebook, you can add stickers to express yourself in unique ways. You can add music, polls, locations and other information to your story using stickers.
To add a sticker to your story:
  1. Open the Facebook mobile app for iOS or Android.
  2. At the top of your News Feed, tap + Add to Story.
  3. Add your photo or video. You can tap at the bottom of your screen to take a new photo or video, or tap to upload a photo or video from your camera roll.
  4. Tap to add a sticker.
  5. Tap Next, then tap Share Now.

When you use stickers, keep in mind that you can:
  • Rotate and resize a sticker by using two fingers to pinch and zoom.
  • Tap to change the style of a sticker.
  • Remove a sticker by dragging and dropping it on at the bottom of the screen.
Note: If you're not seeing certain stickers you'd like to use (example: music or polls), make sure your app is updated to the latest version by visiting the App Store or Google Play Store.

To view a story:
Click a circle in the stories section at the top of your News Feed. If someone has shared a story you haven't seen yet, you'll see a blue ring around their story. There are a few stories you may see:
  • Stories from friends or profiles you follow.
  • Stories from Pages you like or follow.
  • Event stories.
  • Live stories.
When you watch someone's story, you can skip forwards, backwards or pause:
  • Click on the left of the story to go to the previous photo or video, or on the right to move forwards or skip a story.
  • Click and hold to pause a story.
To reply to a story:
  1. Open the story you'd like to reply to.
  2. Click Reply at the bottom of the story. You can only reply to stories shared by your friends.
Replies to someone's story are sent in Messenger and can only be seen by the story's owner and the person replying.
The story owner will see a preview of their story along with your reply. This story preview will disappear after 24 hours, but any replies will remain visible in the conversation and will not disappear.
When you add a photo or video to your story, it appears in the following places:
  • At the top of Facebook News Feed: Your story will appear in the stories section at the top of your friends' or followers' News Feed on Facebook.
  • At the top of Messenger: Your story will appear in a row at the top of your Messenger inbox.
Your stories will be visible to your selected audience for 24 hours. Any photos or videos you add to your story on Facebook will also appear in your story on Messenger.
Stories can be viewed on the Facebook and Messenger apps, Facebook Lite and www.facebook.com.
Note: If you share your Instagram story to Facebook, it will also appear as a story at the top of your News Feed in Facebook and in the Messenger app. Keep in mind that any Instagram story you share to Facebook and Messenger will use your existing story privacy settings you've chosen in the Facebook or Messenger app.
Each photo or video in your story is available in the stories section in Facebook and the Messenger app for 24 hours.
When you go Live, the video will be available in your story for as long as you're live.
Any photos or videos you add to your story will appear on both the Facebook and Messenger app, and will be shared with the same audience across both apps.
You can share your story with Facebook friends, followers, and people you chat with on Messenger. You control who you share your story with, and you can change your privacy settings anytime.
To change your story privacy settings:
  1. Create or upload a photo or video to share to your story, then tap Next.
  2. Tap next to Your Story, then select your audience:
    • Public: Your Facebook friends, followers and people you've chatted with on Messenger will see your stories. Anyone who follows you can see your story, but only people you're friends with can reply.
    • Friends and Connections: Your Facebook friends and Messenger connections will see your stories. When you select this option, you can also tap Hide Your Story From to choose specific people you don't want to see your stories.
    • Friends Only: Only your Facebook friends will see your story on Facebook and the Messenger app. Your Messenger connections will not see your story. When you select this option, you can also tap Hide Your Story From to choose specific people you don't want to see your stories.
    • Custom: You can select specific people who will be able to see your stories.
Note: If you've placed someone on your Restricted list, they won't be able to see your story.
Can I change my audience for something I already shared to my story?
To change your story privacy settings after you share your story:
  1. From the Stories section in the top right of your News Feed, click Your Story.
  2. Click .
  3. Select Edit Story Settings.
  4. Click to choose the audience you'd like to share your story with, then tap Save.
Any changes you make to your story privacy settings will automatically update across both Facebook and Messenger.

When you share a photo or video to your story, you can always check to see who has viewed it. Only you are able to see who has viewed your story.
To see who has viewed your story:
  1. From your News Feed, go to the Stories section in the top right.
  2. Click Your Story.
  3. Click in the bottom left of any photo or video in your story. If you don't see this, no one has viewed your story yet.
Your List of Story Viewers
When looking at the list of your story viewers, keep in mind:
  • Your Facebook friends who have viewed your story will be listed first.
  • If your story privacy settings allow Messenger connections, the names of your connections will show up below your list of Facebook friends.
  • If your story privacy is set to Public, you'll be able to see the number of followers who have viewed your story, but not specific follower names.
You can always change your story privacy settings to control who can see your story. Learn more about stories on Facebook.
When you mute a story from a person, Page or group, their story will no longer appear in the Stories section at the top of your News Feed. Only you can see when you mute or unmute someone's story.
To mute a story:
  1. Go to the Stories section in the top right of your News Feed.
  2. Click a story from the person, Page or group you'd like to mute.
  3. Click Story options in the top right of their story.
  4. Click Mute [Username].
To unmute a story:
  1. Go to the Stories section in the top right of your News Feed.
  2. Click Story options in the top right of the Stories section.
  3. Click Stories You've Muted.
  4. Click Unmute next to the name of the person, Page or group.
Keep in mind that muting someone's story is different from unfriending or unfollowing them. When you mute someone's story, you will still remain friends with them, and you'll still see their posts in your News Feed.
To delete a photo or video you've added to your story on Facebook:
  1. Go to the Stories section in the top right of your News Feed.
  2. Click Your Story at the top.
  3. Click to find the photo or video you want to delete.
  4. Click Story options in the top right.
  5. Click Delete Photo or Delete Video.
Keep in mind that when you delete a photo or video from your story on Facebook, it will also be deleted from Messenger. Any changes you make to your story will update across both apps.
If you see someone else's story that you don't want to see, you can mute their story so it doesn't show up in your Stories section.

While you can't turn off Facebook notifications for stories entirely, you can:
Facebook stories notifications
Notifications about stories follow your other notification settings on Facebook. For example, if your notifications for Close Friend activity are turned on, you'll get notifications about stories from people on your Close Friends list.

Messenger stories notifications
You can turn your Messenger notifications for stories on or off in the Messenger app. Learn more about managing your stories notifications in Messenger.
If you see a photo or video in a story and think it goes against Facebook's Community Standards, you can report it:
  1. From your News Feed, go to the Stories section in the top right and click to open the story.
  2. Click to find the photo or video you want to report.
  3. Click Story options in the top right.
  4. Click Give Feedback or Report Story, then follow the on-screen instructions.
