Takedowns

Sometimes in /r/pics, a picture is posted that may warrant a removal outside our normal set of rules. This page describes this process, what can be taken down, how you can file a takedown request, and other useful information. If you are interested in filing a takedown request, please read this page in its entirety.

Please understand that this takedown process will only remove the thread from listings and search. The post and image can still be accessed through a direct link. If you need an image removed, contact the image host first/while doing this!

Takedown Requests

If you need a post to be removed, you can file a takedown request. Please read this section before filing one so you can understand what and what is not actionable and how to file a takedown request properly. Improper / Invalid takedown requests will be ignored

What are valid takedown reasons?

You must have a good reason for us to remove a post. The following scenarios are eligible for a takedown request.

  • Someone is using my copyrighted work without permission (See “copyright” section)

  • Someone is using a picture of me without my permission (See “personal” section)

These are the only valid reason to request a takedown. If your scenario does not meet these examples, do not file a takedown request. If a post breaks our rules, please use the reddit “report” function or contact /r/pics at https://www.reddit.com/message/compose?to=%2Fr%2Fpics

Copyright takedowns are for when your personal work is being posted without your permission.

Please note, the /r/pics takedown request is NOT A DMCA removal request! If you would like to file a proper DMCA, you must contact legal@reddit.com – In certain cases, we may be unable to process a copyright takedown and will request that you file a DMCA with reddit.

Only the copyright holder may file for a /r/pics takedown request. We do not accept takedowns by proxy. You do not need to be a verified photographer to file a copyright takedown, however being verified can speed up the process. See the section on how to file a takedown request below. Please understand we have no way to remove the file from the image host, you will need to handle this process separately and go through the image host to have the file removed. We can only remove the thread!

Alternative

Instead of removing the thread, we can simply leave a comment and sticky it to the top of the thread indicating that you are the original artist. We can also link to your personal site (not social media) with the assumption the site does not have any purchase links. If you would rather have us do this, please let us know in the takedown request.

Personal takedowns

If you are not the copyright holder but you personally are in an image, we can still remove the thread. Please understand the following:

  • We cannot remove the image from the image host, we can only remove the thread. If you want to have the image removed, you will need to contact the image host. See the section on external hosts below

  • We will only remove threads that have your full face visible. We cannot remove a thread just because your shoe is in the top corner.

  • You will be required to send in verifying information. Often, social media links are enough.

  • You should be able to link to the original image.

  • We cannot guarantee a removal if you follow this process. If we are unable to process your takedown request, we suggest that you contact the image host.

Personal Information

In order to verify you, we often require personal information from you, generally, just social media links are enough. Your personal information is only sent to a trusted small team of long-time /r/pics moderators, is not shared, and is deleted right when your takedown is processed.

Unable to process

If we are unable to process the removal of a personal image, we ask that you contact the image host and legal@reddit.com

Revenge porn / Sexually explicit material

Please do not submit takedowns for revenge porn or any sexually explicit material. Please use the "report" button under the post and contact site administrators directly at contact@reddit.com as well as the image host.

External sites

We cannot control the content on any external site. In order to have an image completely removed from the host itself, you will need to contact the host themselves. Popular image hosts and the takedown links for those sites are at:

  • Can I submit a takedown against my own post?

    • No, please use the delete function built into reddit, and contact the image host.

  • Can I submit a takedown request on behalf of someone else?

    • No, you cannot

  • You didn’t accept my takedown request!

  • Is this a legal process?

    • No

  • How long does the process take?

    • We strive for fast response, but please allow up to 24 hours.

  • Do you log removals done in this manner?

  • Doesn't logging and including the link make the whole process redundant?

    • A bit, which is why we suggest anyone filing a takedown to contact the image host first and foremost. Even then, the amount of people viewing /r/picstakedown is exceptionally small.

  • Can I file a takedown on a comment?

    • No
