I’m not saying to break up, I’m saying don’t jeopardize your finances for someone who isn’t financially obligated to you. That might mean a few months or a few years of living apart, but an hour during rush hour traffic is hardly a long distance relationship (or a dealbreaker for commuting either).
8 years together suggests financial obligations are in place. Saying they should live apart for years for $5/hr (much less due to the commute) is ludicrous in my opinion. The extra 80 minutes a day in the car plus wear and tear on the vehicle and the strain on the relationship? Not EVEN worth it.
