ECDC traineeship programme

Corporate information

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) offers a traineeship programme targeted towards recent university graduates who are at the beginning of a new professional career. The purpose of the programme is to provide trainees with an understanding of the Centre and its role within the activities of the European Union while also providing an opportunity to acquire practical knowledge and professional experience.

The duration of traineeships is between a minimum of five months and a maximum of nine months.  Successful candidates are recommended to have an education and background relating to the activities of ECDC.

  • Completed their studies and been awarded a full university degree by the closing date for applications.
  • A very good command of English (the language of day-to-day operations at ECDC). Knowledge of additional EU languages is an asset.

Frequently asked questions

When does the traineeship programme start?

Trainees are expected to start the programme between March and June 2020.

I applied last year but was unsuccessful, can I apply again this year?

Yes, we would welcome your candidature again.

Can I get feedback on my application?

Due to the volume of applications we receive and our limited resources, ECDC is only able to contact those candidates who are invited to an interview.

I am not a national of an EU Member State, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein, but I have a residence permit in one of these countries, can I apply?

To be considered eligible you must be a national or citizen of one of the above mentioned countries. Holding a residence permit is not sufficient enough.

Can medical students apply for a traineeship?

Unfortunately not. To be considered eligible you must have completed your studies and been awarded a full university degree.

What can I do if my application has been rejected?

Please note that the decision of ECDC to reject an application is final and binding and there is no appeal procedure. If an application is unsuccessful, a candidate may re-apply for a subsequent training period.

Does ECDC provide any assistance in finding accommodation in Stockholm?

No, we are unable to provide assistance. Trainees are responsible for finding their own accommodation. We can however provide you with practical advice when looking for accommodation (where to look, etc.)

Does ECDC provide health insurance?

We provide all trainees with accident insurance. However, trainees must take out valid health insurance valid in Sweden, prior to the start of their traineeship. Proof of this insurance will be requested before the traineeship starts.

Traineeship grant

ECDC pays a monthly grant (yearly reviewed) and a travel allowance to compensate the expenses incurred at the beginning and at the end of the traineeship from the place of residence.

The amount of the traineeship grant is decided by ECDC on a yearly basis. The revised amount will apply from the 1 January of the concerned year. Please note that this review can result in an increase or decrease of the traineeship grant amount.

The exact traineeship grant amount for 2020 is not yet know but will be communicated to selected candidates ahead of the interviews. For reference, the monthly 2019 traineeship grant was 1,460.15 EUR

Equal opportunities

ECDC applies equal opportunities and accepts applications without distinction on the grounds of age, race, political, philosophical or religious conviction, sex or sexual orientation and regardless of disabilities, marital status or family situation.
