Tips & Strategies

Here are some general tips to help tip some balances to your favor for some of these trophies:
  1. You can change the gameplay settings to either make yourself invincible, add more lives, etc. These changes will close the current game you had going, but they DO NOT block any trophies. To change the game settings, hover over the game of your choice in the main menu, press options Options , then from there you can change the controls and whatever else you think will help. You can even change the controls to whatever buttons work for you if you don't like what the collection set for those games.
  2. Have a second controller because a couple of these trophies require a second player to be on in order for the trophies to unlock.
  3. For the local scoreboard trophies, they will most likely pop after you finish your current game. So if you beat the high score, just finish the game like you normally would and the trophy will pop when the game is over.
  4. Since different games will be involved in getting these trophies, this guide will have a breakdown of how each game works as well as the default controls for those games and the enemies for some games such as Tempest and Centipede.

  2. Press Cross again to start it.
  3. After a couple seconds, pause the game, click on main menu, then move on to the next game. For the Atari 2600 games after trying them out, pause the game Options and hit the "Reset" option cause it will function on a digital Atari console. Then back out of the game by pressing Circle

Start a game in all the main games and the Atari 2600 cartridge games and the trophy will pop as soon as you start your last game.

For those who have played blackjack before, you'll know how to get this.

For those who don't, here's how black jack generally works:
  1. You play the game by trying to beat the dealer's hand by getting as close to 21 without going over.
      2. For Ace (A) cards, It is up to you to decide if it's a 1 or 11. Kings (K), Queens (Q), and Jacks (J) have a value of 10.
      3. If you get a total value of 21 on your first two cards, you automatically win $35
      4. The "Hit" option means add another card. If you are satisfied with your cards, then don't hit anymore or you will bust out

You start each game with $200. To get to $400, you must play carefully because it all depends on how lucky the cards are dealt. Sometimes, you may look like you're winning at one point, but then the dealer will end up winning with a lucky hand. If you're feeling lucky, you can risk your win by doubling your bet, which will either double your win or make you pay more for the loss. You can place each bet before the cards are dealt (before the beginning of each round, you can bet between $1-$25), but how you wish to approach this is up to you. This may take a few games and some luck, but there is a gameplay instruction manual in the main menu if you are still unsure on how the game works or if you are struggling with the game. To see the manual, hover over the game in the collection's main menu and press Square.

Here is how to play Centipede:
  • Left Stick: Up & Down Left Stick: Left & Right -Move Around
  • Press or Hold Cross -Shoot
How Centipede works:
  1. At the bottom of the screen, you control a blaster.
  2. The overall objective of the game is to shoot down the centipede as quickly as possible. The centipede will be this long creature that comes from the top and will try to crawl its way down to eliminate you. When you shoot the centipede however, it will break into smaller centipedes and add more mushrooms, so you will need to be quick while also avoiding the other enemies such as the Spiders and Scorpions.

For this trophy, you must beat the high score of 16,543. You can change the settings in the collection main menu before entering the game to help turn the tides in your favor in terms of difficulty and the amount of lives you start with. Once you beat this high score, the trophy will pop. Silver Sharp Shooter has a chart for more information on how many points each enemy will give as you play.
Dawn of a New Era
Reach the top of the local scoreboard in Liberator
3.97%
Ultra Rare
Bronze
The default controls for Liberator are:
  • Left Stick - Aim
  • Cross - Shoot
  • Square - Shields

In Liberator, you gain points by destroying enemy bases on each planet and shooting down the enemy projectiles coming towards you as well as how many of your ships survived in the level. The game is in contrast to Missile Command because Liberator has you destroying cities rather than defending those cities by shooting down missiles. You have 4 ships, one on each corner of the screen. Also, you will be aiming your shots using a red aim sight that can be controlled manually. However, you can only fire one ship at a time depending on where you aim. For example, aiming in the top left area of the screen will only fire the top left ship. But, you can shoot both ships on one side of the screen if your aiming sight is in the middle while on the left or right side of the screen. If one of your ships gets destroyed, it will be replaced by using one of your lives. When you successfully clear a planet, the next one will increase its point values as well (Level 2 doubles the points, Level 3 triples the points, Level 4 multiplies by 4, and so on). If you reach 20,000 or above, the trophy will unlock.

Space duel is an early multiplayer game for its time. This arcade game is basically the same as Asteroids, except that you will be shooting various shapes like cubes, diamonds, and pinwheels instead of circles. The game is also designed on a 5 control layout just like Asteroids.

The default controls for this game are:
  • Left - Rotate Left
  • Right - Rotate Right
  • Up - Thrust
  • Cross - Fire
  • Square - Shield (acts the same in Asteroids Deluxe)

This trophy will require another player, but this can be done using two controllers. Basically, have player two do absolutely nothing while player one goes to town on gathering points.

For this easy trophy, all you haft to do is gather 5,000 points or more by shooting the flying objects. You might get this without even trying on your first game. You can also change the game's settings in the collection's main menu to make 5,000 points very easy to reach in your game.

The best recommended settings are:
  1. Have your starting lives at 6 so you can have room for error
  2. Bonus Lives at 8,000 points
  3. Change the difficulty to Easy. There are 4 difficulties here (Easy, Medium, Hard, Hardest). Difficulty will not affect this trophy, but they are there for those who would like to test their skills in the game

Ironically, the high score listed in the game is 10,101. You will score points by shooting at the enemies on the lanes within each level. If you have played Tempest before, the overall gameplay may be familiar but with different controls.

The controls are:
  • Press/Hold Cross - Fire
  • Press Square - Superzapper Weapon (Available only once per level, kills all enemies on the screen)
  • Left Stick: Left Left Stick: Right or Left Right - Move around the outer layers of the level (Your movement can go left or right, regardless of the level layout)

When the game is over, the trophy will pop. If you are going for Gold Digging Deep, feel free to practice as much as you like until you feel ready to take on the trophy.
Betrayal
Kill your human opponent in a 2-player game of arcade Warlords before any AIs die
5.08%

Warlords is a multiplayer game that can be played solo or with another friend. In this game, each player must defend their castles from the dragon's fireball that will bounce around the map destroying the outer walls of other castles.

The controls are:
  1. Players will move their defensive shield with Left Stick to help deflect any fireballs that come near their castle walls.
  2. Pressing and holding Cross will allow players to catch the incoming fireballs for a charged shot. These charged shots will increase the fireballs speed for a small amount of time. However, holding a fireball will expose your defenses cause the fire will drip into your walls and melt them away, so be careful.

As the game progresses however, more fireballs will be added, making it competitive between the four castles. This is another 2 player trophy that will require a second controller. For this Warlords trophy, you must land the killing blow on player two. Simply have player two do nothing while you and the other two AI players deflect fireballs at each other. A player is eliminated when the fireballs have destroyed enough of the castle defenses to go inside their castle and fly around in the middle where the character head is seen. Once you take out player two, the trophy will pop. This method can also help you with Gold We Don't Need No Fortification since you would only deal with two AI players rather than three. In a two player game, your castle would be on the bottom right corner while player two would be on the bottom left corner. To help you better understand this game better, here is some game play:

For this trophy, you will need to choose either game mode 13, 14, or 15 because these are made into shooting galleries for the game. Game mode 14 is a good recommendation because you will be using guided missiles to help you land your shots on the moving targets. The only concern on your playthrough however, is that there will be a time limit, so you must get 99 points before time runs out to get this trophy.

The controls here are:

  • Left Right - Move

Reach the top of the local scoreboard in Black Widow
7.28%
Very Rare
Silver
In Black Widow, you control a black widow spider who is trying to defend its web from invading bugs. Because the levels are mapped into spider webs, the only real change is how aggressive the enemies will become later on.

There are two methods in how you can reach the scoreboard:
  1. You can start from the beginning and gather as much points as possible. By taking this route, make sure you have good settings all set up, so then you can beat the high score without too much hassle. The best settings can be the following:
    • Starting Lives at 6
    • Bonus Lives at 20,000 points
    • Difficulty on Easy
    • Advanced Start doesn't matter, but the options are up to levels 13, 21, 37, and 53.
  2. You can enable "Advanced Start" in the main menu settings and choose level 13. Killing the enemies here will net you plenty of points, but be on the lookout for the dollar sign ($) that appears during the level. Killing that enemy will bank you a lot of points.

By default, the movement is controlled using the d-pad directional arrows (Up Down Left Right ). Also, you will be shooting with Right Stick for this game. If this is not working out for you, you can change the controls how you see fit, such as Cross for shooting and using Left Stick for movements instead of the default settings. Once you run out of lives after beating the game's default high score, this trophy will be yours.

Below is a chart from Retro Game Construction Zone of all the enemies in the game and how many points they will give. The fleas are the fourth enemy types on the chart who offer 200 points per kill. You'll notice these quickly cause they fall as fast as raindrops. What you need to do here is shoot them before they hit the ground by holding the Cross button or mashing the button quickly. They'll be falling quick, so you'll need to be on the move once you see them falling. Otherwise, you can restart the game if you fail or end up dying in the process. Once you shoot down your tenth consecutive flea, the trophy will pop.

This is a fun trophy that you can get without any difficulty. Start Lunar Lander on Prime difficulty due to its settings on gravity and go way up, but not too high. Once you think you're high enough, turn your vehicle and burn your jet fuel to build up speed as you plummet to the surface. The velocity will build up as long as you are facing downward (the jet fuel will be burning upwards rather than downwards like its supposed to).

The controls for Lunar Lander can be found in Gold Space Jockey.

Millipede is very similar to Centipede since this game serves as a sequel. The gameplay is exactly the same, with the additions of more bugs being added into the game for players to shoot at for points. This may take a couple tries. The DDTs are the dark blue bomb like capsules that will damage the millipede if it gets caught in the explosive cloud. What you need to do here is shoot a nearby DDT when the millipede gets close and hope that the cloud kills the whole thing. If you fail, you can restart and try again. This is where the main menu settings will come into play. The high score here is 89,175, so trying this legit will be difficult unless you're a millipede god. To make this trophy possible, you will need to use the game's cheat mode to make it easy. The cheat mode grants invincibility from everything except the spiders.

Along with cheat mode, you should activate the following settings:
  1. Starting lives at 5 just in case you get attacked a lot from the spiders
  2. Bonus Lives at 12,000 points
  3. Both Spider and Head difficulties set to Easy
  4. Advanced Start of 3x Bonus for points

Once you reach about 90,000+ points, let the spiders kill you to end the game. Although you will still get the trophy, your score will not be posted due to cheating.

Pong is basically a classic arcade version of Tennis, where you and another player score points by making the other player miss the ball. This can come at any moment while you are playing. Send the ball to a corner where the other player is unable to reach. The trophy will pop if it happens. Keep in mind that you can combine this with shutting out your opponent to save you some time.

This trophy is going to be tricky because you must shutout your opponent in an entire game of Pong.

To make it easier, use the following settings:
  1. Set 11 points to win
  2. Change the difficulty to Easy
  3. Enable gaps in the corners
  4. Change the sensitivities of you and the other player. This will significantly make this shutout easy when you have your preferred speed while the other player is set on a lower speed than you. Also, there are two different types that you can choose from. The first, Absolute, makes your movements very sensitive by how much force you move with Left Stick: Up and  Left Stick: Down. The other one, Relative, allows you to move up and down with more control by going up and down without any force of sensitivity.

Once you shutout your opponent, the trophy will pop.
For All Insectkind!
Achieve a score of 300,000 or higher in Yars' Revenge
1.11%
Ultra Rare
Silver
This is a hard trophy that will require a lot of knowledge about the game and how to score big within each level. Basically to get to 300,000 (which is quite high), build up your Zorlon Cannon (the rectangle on the left side of the screen) and shoot it at the spiral right when it charges across the screen each and every time. Page 6 of the game's manual tells you how much you earn for each activity in the game as well as some helpful hints to help you out.

Here's how the points work:
  • Cells hit by missile Cross or eaten - 69 points with 100 in bonus points
  • Qotile destroyed - 1,000 points
  • Swirl destroyed in place - 2,000 points
  • Swirl destroyed in midair - 6,000 points and an extra life

There are also 3 High score features to take note of as well:
  • At 70,000 points, the swirl triples in frequency and will sometimes fire instantly. The shield will turn blue.
  • At 150,000 points, the swirl returns to normal frequency, but it will remain in midair to try and kill you. The shield will turn grey.
  • At 230,000 points, the swirl triples in frequency and will sometimes fire instantly. Same as at 70,000 points except that the shield will turn pink.

Finally, here are some tips to help you out:
  • Try playing the game on "Ultimate Yars". Even though this game mode can be difficult, this mode will allow you to stockpile your Zorlon Cannon shots and only summon them when you need them. Also, the swirl will be launching faster and sooner than usual, which makes easy points once you get the timing of your shots down.
  • When playing on "Ultimate Yars", make sure that the Destroyer Missile destruction is turned OFF because this will allow your shots to flow uninterrupted.
  • The overall timing of the swirl launching will always be random, but the spawns have a color pattern. What this means is the Qotile (the main enemy on the right with a shield) cycles through different colors within the same order and pace every time. Whenever it turns brown for example, it will become a swirl. Later on in the triple score ranges, these swirl colors will be changing on blue and light green. Once you learn these cycles involving brown, blue and light green, you'll know when to prepare to fire the cannon.
  • If the "Ultimate Yars" game mode does not suit you, try getting this trophy in game 0 (children's version). This game mode makes the game easy to play, but it will eventually get harder later on.

Alternatively, you can use the PS4 save exploit to easily make your way up to 300,000 by correcting your mistakes within your playthorugh. For those who don't know how to do the exploit, here's how it works:
  1. Whenever you shoot down the Qotile and enter the next level, pause the game and quit to the main menu. You will then see a blue game disc in the top left corner, meaning the game is saved.
  2. Once the game saves, close the application and press "Options Options" on it and click on the option of "Upload/Download". This is where the exploit comes into play.
  3. Once you're there, you will see the upload save data on the left and the download save data on the right. For every new level, you will want to upload the saved data and check off "apply to all" before saying yes. You must have a PS PLUS Subscription to use this feature!!
  4. Once you upload the data, enter the game and pick up where you left off.
  5. If you die or mess up in any way, DO NOT back out to the main menu. Instead, close the application without saving and return to "Upload/Download". Then you will need to download your saved data and check off apply all before saying yes. Once that's done, enter the game and try again.

Silver
In Yar's Revenge, you are controlling a fly called a Yar who must eat through the shield or fire with Cross to build up their Zorlon Cannon. This is the foundation for how you can try to get Silver For All Insectkind!. To gain the Zorlon Cannon, eat away at the shield on the right hand side of the screen or touch the Qotile when its in a standstill, then wait for the swirl to fire. When the timing is right, fire the cannon but get out of the way cause it will kill you too. If you successfully hit the swirl, the screen will transition to the next level and the trophy will pop. You will want to eventually make this a habit in every level to score big points. You should also be careful within each level transition because there is a thin black vertical line that can trigger an Easter Egg if you get caught in it when the explosion ends.

Here's what happens:
  • If you trigger the game's Easter Egg, you will be brought back to the level select screen while seeing a programmer's initials, meaning its GAME OVER and you must restart from the beginning. This Easter Egg mainly serves as a clue within the game manual for players to look at the names in a certain way. For those who are curious, the initials are HSWWSH.

This gold trophy is not as bad when you know how to time your shots. In Canyon Bomber, you and an AI are working together to clear blocks from a canyon using different types of aircraft. To be specific, you will be the yellow aircraft and you drop bombs by pressing Cross. Each aircraft will affect how bombs will drop, meaning you will alternate between helicopters, bombers, airplanes and so on. The aircraft matters because they travel from one side of the screen to the other at a fixed speed, which is why you must make your shots count. This will takes some tries, but when you get the bombing patterns down, you'll be able to clear all the debris, but be careful. Missing your shots or not shooting at all will decrease the bomb meter. The game will end once you run out of bombs to drop.

This one can be a bit annoying. You must clear all the green mushrooms that are on the screen, but try not to shoot the centipede because each time it breaks apart, a new mushroom will spawn. You can also move your shooter further up a bit to speed up your shots on any nearby mushrooms. Once you clear all the mushrooms in a single level, the trophy will pop. To try and make things easier, have the difficulty on easy and start with 5 lives. That way you will have more chances in a single level to clear the area of all the mushrooms.

Here's the general controls for Combat:
  • Left Stick - Move
  • Right Stick - Aim
  • Cross - Shoot

In Combat, Tank Pong is a game mode that can be played either with another player or solo. This game turns your bullets into bouncing balls that can bounce off the walls numerous times to make good trick shots on your enemies. This can easily be boosted with another controller. What you haft to do here is position player two (the blue tank) where your ricochet shot bounces off the walls seven or more times and lands the killing blow. Try out your shots to help coordinate your aim and where you can put player two for the trophy. You will need to set up a game that allows "bounced shot kills" for this trophy to work such as Game Mode 9, where all player shots can bounce and it takes place in a small maze.

Earn 800 points in Lunar Lander’s COMMAND MISSION

Gold
The main controls for Lunar Lander are:
  • R2 - Thrust (This slows down your lander when you try to make your landings)
  • Left Right - Rotate
  • Cross - Abort
  • Square - Variation (changes difficulties when you are in the game. Avoid pressing this once you start COMMAND mission).
  • Touch Pad Right - Keeps the Thrust on, burning through your fuel, but helping you cover some distance
  • Touch Pad Left - Turns off the Thrust, reverting back to R2 control.

This trophy can be hard, but it can be earned when you get used to the controls. To start, you must first change the main menu settings of your starting fuel to 1,800 so then you have more time and room for error to line up your landings. Focus on landing on the 5x spots (or 4x if the 5x is not there) because you will gain 250 points for a perfect landing on the 5x spots, 200 points on 4x, and so on. What makes this difficult however, is that on COMMAND mission, you're lander may spin uncontrollably, making it difficult to line up the landing. But, if you press Cross, the abort control will instantly help you regain control by shooting the lander upwards at the cost of some fuel. Velocity also plays a part here cause if you are within double digits or higher on your landing, you will crash. So when you get close to the ground, use your fuel to slow your lander down to single digits for a clean landing. 1,800 fuel should be enough for about 4-5 landing ships to make this trophy possible. It is recommended that when a new ship spawns on the left, let it drift off until you are over the 5x or 4x before pressing Cross. That way, it saves fuel. Here is a video to help you find these 5x and 4x spots:

Finish Level 81 or above in arcade Tempest without losing a life in the level
0.97%
Ultra Rare
Gold
This is what either makes or breaks your platinum playthrough. You haft to survive level 81 or above WITHOUT DYING.

Here are some tips to try and help you out:
  1. To get to this level, enable the level select feature (the game’s cheat mode) from the collection main menu and choose level 81 in the game.
  2. Find a sensitivity that works for you! The sensitivity will be set on 5, but you can change how fast or slow your ship can be in the game.
  3. You can also change the game difficulty to Easy, but this will have little impact on what the level is going to throw at you.
  4. Only use the SuperZapper Square when you feel overwhelmed or need to wipe out a cluster of enemies closing in on you.
  5. You can move using either the left stick or the d-pad directional arrows. Try experimenting with both to see which method you are more comfortable with.

Also, here's some information on the enemies you will encounter in the game:
  1. Flippers - Yellow bow tie enemies that flip between segments. They will move ridiculously fast in level 81. In order to kill them, position your ship by moving away from them and spamming Cross. They will disappear if you hit them.
  2. Tankers - Diamond shaped enemies that will move in a straight line. They serve as mystery boxes in this level because once you shoot them, they will split up and reveal hidden enemies that could catch you off guard. If you don't kill them, they'll reveal the enemies on the segments once they reach the top.
  3. Spikers - Spiral shaped enemies that leave behind a colored line of spikes on the segment they traveled on. They will then retreat into the play field if they aren't killed quickly and come back as Tankers. When you transition to the next level, avoid these spiked lines. Fortunately, they can be shot away so you can have an open segment back later on.
  4. Fuseballs - Rainbow colored sparks that move rapidly up and down the segments. These things are annoyingly difficult to kill because even though they do not fire back, they can only be destroyed by the superzapper or if you catch them in your line of fire. Their behavior consists of slowly moving to one side in level 81 while acting like a coat zipper going up and down. When they zig zag down, they are left vulnerable to attack for a few seconds before they come back up to try and destroy your ship.
  5. Pulsars - These are identified as electric currents that stay at the bottom of the play field. Their behavior involves moving to a segment and blacking it out. In other words, a regular segment in this level will have a colored rim to complete the shape of the level and these pulsars can remove that line for a couple seconds. If your ship moves to a blacked out segment or gets caught in one, you will blow up. To kill these, wait on a lane right next to them and fire away when they transition to your segment. You will first need to watch where they are going so you can plan ahead.

This will be the most frustrating because of how chaotic the level will be, especially with the yellow bow ties, rainbow sparks, etc. Try to stay on the move if you can and spam the fire button as much as possible. If you do somehow manage to survive, you will see the level flashing. That means you are about to move on to the next level, so move your ship away from the lines of spikes by moving to an empty lane before the game moves on. Once you do that, you will earn this trophy in your hall of fame. Here is a visual example of another player beating level 81 flawlessly:

Before going for this trophy, it is recommended that you do the following:
  1. Hover over the game in the collection's main menu and press Options.
  2. Go to Controls and press L1 or R1 to change the sensitivities of the other players besides yourself. The sensitivity will impact the AI in this game because the slower their defensive shields go, the more exposed they will become since they won't move or reach fast enough to prevent the fireballs from breaching their castles

This trophy will take a few tries in Warlords. To remove your walls, you can let the AI players destroy them on their own or wait to catch a fireball. By catching and holding the fireball, the fire will drip into your defenses and destroy any walls you have. It will release on its own after some time. Having a second controller is recommended here because it puts less stress on the trophy when you only need to deal with two AI players. As the game progresses however, more fireballs will come into play, so stay on your toes and hope for the best. If you beat the two AI and player two in this case, the trophy will pop.
