Roadmap

Stage 1: Story Mode and Collectibles

The 1st stage will be the discovery stage : play the story mode normally, on the difficulty you prefer, while collecting all the Golden Laurels. Golden Laurels are the only kind of collectible in the game, and will let you change both heroes' costumes if you get all of them in each stage. Missing a Golden Laurel isn't much of a big deal, since every level can be replayed as much and as soon as you wish.

During this stage, you'll learn the basics of fighting and how to deal with each enemy, which will be crucial for the later part of your playthrough. Take your time and explore every zone as you feel like, spot the non-necessary fights and figure how to solve every puzzle as it will save you lots of time for the Extreme playthrough. You should get enough helmets to buy all the Combo attacks at the merchant's shop by the end of the game, which will greatly improve the length of some fights.

While we're at it, talking about combos, there is a combo that you will save most of your helmets for : the Twister combo.

Twister is, without any question, the best attack in the game - it turns Asterix and Obelix into tornadoes for ~7 seconds and basically wipes out the entire room, drastically diminishing the number of enemies during the mandatory fights. Of course, this will be a cornerstone of not only your first playthrough, but mainly your Extreme playthrough - Twister is available for purchase in Helvetia for 30,000 helmets.

Stage 2: Gold Medals on all Trials

Here comes the first "not very fun" part: obtaining Gold medals on all Time and Courses trials. Trials are a new addition in this remaster - during your playthrough, you'll be able to interact with steles, thus starting the trial.

They are basically little courses split in two categories:
  • Courses will scatter a bunch of coins you'll have to collect by switching between Classic and Remastered modes with R2, in a limited time
  •  Time Attack is very similar to Crash Bandicoot relics trials. You can break boxes to freeze the timer by the same number of seconds written on the box and defeat an enemy to freeze the timer for one second. Your best strategy will be to use your combo attacks to defeat several enemies at once.

You'll always come across 3 Trials per stage : two Courses and one Time Attack. Getting the Gold medal for each of them might take a few tries, as some Gold times are pretty tight and will require some practice.

It has been found that Courses trials are more challenging as you cannot "cheese" them, contrary to Time Trials. Indeed, once you purchase the Twister combo, Time Attack trials become kind of a breeze as you can wipe lots of enemies, saving you TONS of time. Knowing that, it's a good idea to start this part right after finishing the game.

Stage 3: Extreme Mode

This is the "platinum breaker" stage: the Extreme mode.

Best way to describe this mode is an unusually cheap type of difficulty that will mostly test your patience and spatial awareness more than your actual skills. Enemies kill you in 4 or 5 hits, block MOST of your attacks, recover lightning-fast from their stun, and for the cherry on top : your COMBO gauge depletes way faster than usual, which makes landing combo attacks an absolute chore. No need to say that this is the hardest step in the game.

This trophy alone justifies the 7/10 difficulty for the platinum, as it is particularly nerve-wrecking to go through some battles for lots of unnecessary minutes - you'll find a lot more details in Gold Toutatis' right hand and how to approach this mode in the best way possible.

Fortunately, you won't have to suffer for the entirety of the game, since the last level can be almost entirely skipped - refer to Silver These Romans are crazy for more information on how to do this skip.

Stage 4: Cleanup

Congrats for going through this! Now sit back, relax, and collect the remaining miscellaneous trophies you might be missing!

This stage is completely optional, as you might have already got most of the listed trophies during the first two stages of this guide.
Defeat 200 Romans under the effect of the magic potion
Defeat 5000 Romans
Collect more than 99999 helmets
Find and defeat Redbeard in each level

Sling yourself using rubber bands 20 times in less than 30 seconds

Tips & Strategies

Controls

  • Cross : Jump
  • Square : Punch/Interact
  • Triangle : Grab an stunned enemy (meaning there has to be little stars turning around his head)
  • Circle : Charge an enemy - cancels their current attack windup
  • L2 : Makes your partner throw a Roman at you (rarely works)
  • R1 : Dogmatix attack
  • R2 : Switch between Classic and Remastered modes

Enemy Types

  • Legionary - the basic Roman unit, also the most common one - dies in 3 hits, can be easily grabbed and spawns in small squads of 3 to 5.
  • Centurion - easily recognized thanks to their golden armor - on the tougher side in terms of hits needed, as they block most of your attacks with their shield. They always drop a golden helmet (worth 10 normal ones) and a gigot. They always attack with a multi-hit slash, so be very careful!
  • Archer - usually standing on higher grounds - shoots a volley of arrows dealing a lot of damage if all of them land.
  • Norman warrior - a tougher version of the Legionary - like the Centurion, they will block several attacks before receiving damage. (Normandy only)
  • Norman chief - the Norman version of the Centurion - they are more sensible to the charge thanks to their larger size. (Normandy only)
  • Long-spear - a very tall unit, immune to the Charge cancelling - their windup is longer than usual, but they compensate it with a very long range. (Greece only)
  • Pusher - deals no damage, but pushes you away with his giant Q-Tip - jump over his first attack before punching him.
  • Gladiator - a scarier version of the Centurion - harder to defeat than his classic counterpart and always spawns with lions, be aware of his attacks as they deal more damage than the other enemies. (Greece only)
  • Lion - the go-to enemy for the Combo gauge feed - easy to defeat and fills your gauge incredibly fast.
  • Decurion - way stronger than the Legionary, but not as resistant as the Centurion - you'll encounter two variants of him during your playthrough
    • The Greece variant: spawns in water areas - attacks with a spinning fork
    • The Egypt variant: more agressive, has a long range multi-hit fork attack, probably one of the most dangerous in Extreme mode
  • Jumper - leaps into the sky before landing on the player after a couple of seconds - easily avoided but deals unforgiving damage if the attack lands. (Helvetia only
  • Flying Roman - a pesky airborne unit that casually drops bombs on you - wait for them to approach the ground and defeat them with only two hits. Fortunately, their bombs can damage other Romans.
  • Pirate - a stronger version of the Legionary, very similar to the Norman warrior in terms of approach - be careful of their multi-hit attacks.
  • Redbeard - encountered once per stage - very similar to the Centurion, he's always surrounded by his crew and has a dedicated trophy - refer to Bronze An old friend for more information about this enemy.
  • Shield formations - mobile walls of damage - wait for them to retract their spears to hit them. You can also be used as a trampoline in some situations. All 3 variants (Ring, Turtle and Pyramid) are fought in the same way.

Gameplay Tips

  • Hitting a wild boar will spawn a gigot, restoring one point of shield out of five - you can do this infinitely on any of them.
  • Combo attacks are done by getting a full COMBO gauge - each attack consumes between 1 and 3 bars, depending on its efficiency.
  • Press R1 to send Dogmatix bite an enemy, which will disarm them and make them vulnerable for a few seconds.
  • If the combat becomes too chaotic, press R2 to swap to Classic mode, as it sometimes is more readable.
  • Sometimes, you'll hear your partner whistle as they are ready to toss a Roman at you. Jump and hit the poor enemy mid-air, and you will get a X3 multiplier.
  • You can even get a X10 multiplier by letting the flying Roman land on your own Roman-copter, by grabbing another Roman withTriangle
  • Multipliers are cumulative, so try getting some free ones as frequent as possible.
  • Charging enemies with Circle will be EXTREMELY USEFUL on Extreme Mode as you will try to isolate as many of them as possible to build your COMBO gauge.
  • It can't be said enough times: Twister combo is an absolute must as it will make the end game fights a breeze (no pun intended) - thus, try to save at least 30,000 by the time you reach Helvetia, when it becomes purchasable.

Without any doubt, the hardest and most rage-inducing trophy in the entire game. Extreme is an unusually cheap, infuriating and unfun type of difficulty that will mostly test your patience and spatial awareness more than your actual skills.

The gap between Extreme and Hard modes is pretty significant. Here are the notable changes:
  • Every attack deals 3 to 4 points of damage, almost one entire shield - it's important to know that there are no invincibility frames in this game, so you can easily lose most of your HP due to multi-hit attacks
  • Every. Single. Enemy (except Archers and Jumpers) blocks your attacks with their shield, thus requiring double the amount of hits to defeat.
  • Your Combo gauge depletes faster than the speed of light, making it incredibly difficult to perform any combo.
  • Boars drop gigots less frequently when hit, making health more valuable than ever.
  • Enemies recover ridiculously fast from the stun, making them extremely hard to grab.
  • Enemies are not more resistant : they still need the same amount of hits to be defeated, but will deflect more of your attacks, meaning you'll spend more time punching each enemy.

Each fight will feel like an unfair chore, and each victory will feel like an absolute relief, so you will need to skip each battle if possible, meaning that you should only fight when a battle lock is engaged. In terms of enemy difficulty, the dangers are completely reversed : the standard legionaries become the most dangerous enemies in the entire game, because of their walking speed, their numeric superiority, and their shield. Those pesky units run faster than you, and swarm you in no time if you're not mobile enough, killing you in mere seconds. They also die in only 3 hits, so building combo on them one by one is almost impossible. Their attack range is also deceptively long , in terms of both active time and reach, so be extremely careful.

Ironically, superior enemies like decurions and centurions will be a blessing from the sky, as their higher HP will let you build one bar of combo, which is absolutely crucial to succeed.

IMPORTANT : shields can be farmed! Grab them and save your progress with a nearby druid, then go back to the world map and re-enter the level, they will re-appear - very handy for incoming tough battles!

Your best friend will be the Circle button, which finds all its meaning in this mode : since you get cornered very easily by legionaries, use the charge to isolate two or three of them from the pack and defeat them to build some combo.

Classic mode is also recommended, since the charged attacks are way more visible in this mode, letting you know when to flee.

Do not overcommit yourself : trying to defeat an enemy while being completely surrounded will only kill you - remember, this truly is a test of patience, as some fights might take you over 10 minutes to complete. Jumping is not recommended, except when you are completely overwhelmed and have no other way to get out of the fight, as you can easily land on an incoming attack.

Use R1 as much as possible to disarm enemies and make them vulnerable to grab, giving you a nice area of no-go for the enemies

As already mentioned, Helvetia is THE major milestone of your Extreme playthrough, since it unlocks the Twister combo for a very generous total of 30 000 helmets at the merchant's.

The Twister combo is performed by pressing Cross, Square ,Triangle ,Circle while having a full combo gauge. It's the best attack in the game and basically is a room cleaner. If you should have only one combo attack, it's this one, without any question, so keep in mind you build your combo gauge only to land the Twister and save you tons of time and sanity.

Here is a list of the most difficult fights in the game, be mentally prepared for them as they might take you lots of retries - huge thanks to MrHribi for providing us some gameplay for the mentioned fights, their videos will definitely help!

Gaul:
  • Last fight, before freeing Getafix : you have very little room for the fight, so the enemies are tightly gathered. Use the Dogmatix attack and isolate enemies with Circle as much as possible

Normandy:
  • First fight : difficult, but also teaches you the fighting "method" for the rest of the game - be sure to defeat every single enemy before letting Asterix climb on the little rope convey, as more will appear during the rope-pulling sequence.

  • The 57 Romans fight before the second checkpoint : try leaving the Centurions for last, they will easily get targeted by your R1 attacks - avoid them as much as you can during the rest of the battle. You can get inside the ring formation of shields to temporize the fight.

Greece:
  • The elevator fight : three successive fights on narrow platforms with tightly packed enemies - the Power Hammer combo is a good option to quickly neutralize the surrounding enemies.

  • The 60 Romans fight with Asterix alone : patience is the key - you will most likely have to defeat the enemies one by one. Grab the shield powerup as a last resort if your health is almost depleted and are near the end of the fight.

  • The 100 Romans fight before the Maximus cannon room : extremely tight room, with the scary long-spear Romans. Charging them won't stop their attacks, you'll need to hit them. You can still return to the merchant nearby to buy some health back if in trouble.

Helvetia: this stage has everything going for it - most of the fights are skippable, and there are no real tough fight thanks to the generous amount of magic potion and the availability of the Twister combo.

Egypt:
  • The 70 Pirates cave fight : due to their multi-hitting attacks, Pirates can quickly deplete your health bar - isolate some of them with the charge to build your Combo bar and clean the room with a single Twister combo.

  • The final 200 Romans fight : unnecessary hard fight with pits of lava and deceptively annoying stairs placement. Its major saving grace is the health dispenser : walk and stay on the stone tile in the center of the room to replenish one entire shield. Try to isolate the Decurions and the Centurion to build your Combo gauge and pop the Twister. Do not fight on the stairs nor near the lava pits, as enemies will easily knock you in.

Rome:
  • The 1000 Romans fight : your last trial before the Platinum trophy. This is the longest fight in the game by far. Use everything you've learned until now : isolate the enemies, throw some punches, and keep the rythm until you can land your Twister combo. 5 or 6 Twisters might be needed to completely win the fight. If you win this fight, you've basically earned yourself this trophy.

  • The 200 Romans fight : not as hard as the previous, however it is important to mention that you MUST NOT VISIT THE MERCHANT as it prevents remaining enemies to spawn. You can fix this issue by interacting with the Trial stele at the very beginning of the level and immediately quitting the Course.

Keep in mind you only need to complete the first two fights of Rome, since you can perform the glitch mentioned in Silver These Romans are crazy to skip most of the level.

  • Courses - You have to collect coins, switching with R2 between Classic and Remaster modes to make them collectable. Don't hesitate to press Circle in a straight line, it can save you some little, yet precious, time.
  • Time Attack - This challenge is very similar to Crash Bandicoot relics trials. Time freezes are cumulative, so guess who will be your best friend, to the point of almost trivializing them ?...if you said Twister combo, you are absolutely right!

The main tip will be to build your combo gauge before a Time Attack (if possible), and immediately start with a Twister, wiping most of the enemies, and saving you very precious seconds.

There is a hard Time Attack, in Greece, located in the boss room arena which might cause you some trouble. Your best bet will be to perform a simple, yet effective glitch letting you complete the trial easily.

Here is a demonstration:

Greece Time Attack Glitch

This glitch can be done only if you've beaten Greece's final boss once - you need to sprint all the way to the boss room by spamming Circle and start the trial before the boss arrives. If done correctly, the war machine should be shredding the enemies, now counting for the time freeze. Throw yourself into the lava nearby or into the machine's gears and you'll respawn right before the start of the hallway. Sprint again with Circle to reach the waypoint and hopefully get a gold time on this trial.
