About Aetna

Best Health Insurance Companies 2020: How Aetna Compares

Aetna claimed 10th place with a decent overall score of 82.10 this year in the annual consumer Best Health Insurance Company survey. Aetna’s best showing is obtaining a 7th place ranking for both price and claims. Eighty-five percent of those surveyed said they planned to renew with Aetna though only 68% said they would recommend the company to others.

Gauging an insurance company

Before buying with a company it is wise to check on a company's financial strength and complaint record. The A.M. Best rating listed above gives you an idea of Aetna's financial strength to pay claims. A complaint ratio can be found on the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) site. The median complaint ratio from the NAIC is always 1.00. This means half of the insurers have a complaint ratio of under 1.00 and half have a ratio above. Basically, numbers lower than 1.00 are better with fewer complaints than the median and a number higher than 1.00 has more complaints than the median. For health insurance, Aetna (NAIC# 72052) had a complaint ratio of 6.27 for individual health insurance and 23.18 for group health insurance for 2018. 2019 complaint numbers will be available in 2020.

Company Background

A supporting role in American history

Aetna is one of the nation's leaders in health care, providing medical, dental, pharmacy, group life, and disability insurance.

The company got its start well before the turn of the 20th century, when in 1850 Aetna Insurance company created an annuity fund to sell life insurance. Geography buffs might enjoy learning that the company’s name was inspired from a volcano in Sicily called Mt. Etna, at the time the most active volcano in Europe. The company also bonded construction of the Hoover Dam, the National Archives Building, and provided insurance coverage for the Manhattan Project.

Aetna offers approximately 37.2 million members a broad range of traditional and consumer-directed health insurance products and related services, including medical, pharmacy, dental, behavioral health, group life and disability plans. Aetna also provides medical management capabilities and health care management services for Medicaid plans.
