Best Health Insurance Companies 2020: How Anthem Stacks Up
Anthem scored 8th place with a solid overall score of 82.33 in the 2020 Best Health Insurance Company survey. Its highest ranking is 4th place for customer service and lowest is 12th place for ease of use for website and mobile apps. Most surveyed policyholders said they plan to renew with Anthem, 95%, but only 71% said they would recommend the company to others.
Gauging an insurance companyBefore buying with a company it is wise to check on a company's financial strength and complaint record. The A.M. Best rating listed above gives you an idea of Anthem's financial strength to pay claims. A complaint ratio can be found on the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) site. The median complaint ratio from the NAIC is always 1.00. This means half of the insurers have a complaint ratio of under 1.00 and half have a ratio above. Basically, numbers lower than 1.00 are better with fewer complaints than the median and a number higher than 1.00 has more complaints than the median. For life insurance, Anthem (NAIC# 28207) had a complaint ratio of 0.30 for individual health insurance and 0.75 for group health insurance for 2018. 2019 complaint numbers will be available in 2020.
Company Background
A broad offering of health services and insurance
The Anthem name dates back to 1944 and 1946 when Blue Cross of Indiana and Blue Shield of Indiana were formed respectively. Those companies later designated themselves as Anthem. Meanwhile, WellPoint Health Networks was created by Blue Cross of California in 1992. Throughout the years, both Anthem and WellPoint merged with other BCBS affiliates until the two companies came together in 2004. In 2014, WellPoint, Inc. changed its name to Anthem, Inc.and has become one of the largest health benefits companies in the U.S.
Along with many options for health care plans, the company provides a wide range of health products such dental and vision plans, behavioral health services, long-term care insurance, flexible spending accounts, as well as life and disability insurance benefits.
Along with a wide network of providers, Anthem has mobile access tools such as a LiveHealth Online feature, allowing members to talk to a doctor online at any time, and an Anthem Anywhere app which stores your member card and can help you locate providers in your network.

"As long as you have all your paperwork you are good to go. If something is messed up on there end and they lose paper or any bill was not forwarded correctly from healthcare provider, then you have to start over from the beginning. It also means having to contact healthcare provider for correct bill or having them resubmit to the insurance company. I realize this is standard, but when it is not my fault it gets annoying."
