Blue Shield Blue Cross of North Carolina had a strong showing in the 2020 Best Health Insurance Survey with an overall ranking of 2nd place as well as 2nd place for easy of use of website and mobile apps. BCBS of NC, also ranked high, 3rd place, for claims, price and customer service. Nearly all surveyed policyholders said they would renew with BCBS of North Carolina, 96% and 82% said they would recommend the company to others.

Over 80 years of experience

The parent company of BCBS North Carolina (Hospital Care Association) started in 1933 with one of the founders being the dean Duke University School of Medicine.  Prepaid hospital care was offered to families for as little as 2 cents a day.  After 35 years of competition, the HCA consolidate with another hospital savings company in 1968 and in 1973 changed its name to BCBS of North Carolina (BCBSNC). It serves nearly 4 million North Carolinians. Since 2015 BCBSNC has offered an online cost transparency tool that allows users to compare the cost for more than 1,200 medical procedures.
